September 8th 1964 - Ringo advert in MAD magazine

Sam Viviano (art editor of Mad magazine): "In my opinion, this was the best use of the magazine's back cover. It was a parody of the kind of advertising that at first glance resembles the real thing. In this case, she imitated an advertisement for Breck shampoo, which for decades advertised in such fashionable women's magazines as Lady Home Journal and Harper's Bazaar. These advertisements had drawings of beautiful young women with silky long hair. These drawings were made from 1936 to 1957 by Charles Sheldon, and then by illustrator Ralph Williams. Instead of a beautiful young woman with long silky hair, our magazine placed an image of a not very handsome young man with long silky hair (a novelty of 1964). That young man was Ringo Starr, the drummer of the Beatles. The caption under the drawing read: "Make your hair beautiful with Blecch." The portrait was painted by Frank Frazetta. I was fascinated by how a single image can be both beautiful and grotesque, accurately reminiscent of an advertisement and at the same time extravagantly exaggerated."
