Before America entered World War II, British military pilots were already training right here in Terrell, Texas.

There was just one problem: America was supposed to be neutral.

So the young RAF cadets crossed the Atlantic to Canada, were decommissioned from British military service, and entered the United States as civilians. From there came a days-long train journey to Terrell and the No. 1 British Flying Training School.

They trained here. They lived here. And for a while, they became part of Terrell.

When their training was finished, they returned to Canada, reenlisted in the Royal Air Force , and went back to a world at war.

But their time in Terrell became about a whole lot more than learning to fly. More than 80 years later, Terrell still honors those brave airmen at Number 1 British Flying Training School Museum - No. 1 BFTS.

📬 MAIL THEFT REPORTED IN THE TERRELL/POETRY AREA - 09/05/26

A follower recently sent Everything Terrell these photos after finding mail belonging to multiple people scattered along the road near CR 243 and CR 249.

Since then, other neighbors have contacted us confirming they’ve also had mail stolen or found missing in the area. Some have told us they’ve already reported the thefts Kaufman County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Postal Service.

So if you live around CR 243, CR 249 or the surrounding Terrell/Poetry area, it may be worth checking your mailbox, especially if you’ve been expecting something that never arrived.

If you believe your mail was stolen:

📬 Report suspected mail theft to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service: 877-876-2455 or use their online reporting system.

🚔 File a report with local law enforcement, particularly if checks, credit cards, identification, packages or other valuable items are missing.

💳 If a check, debit/credit card or financial information is missing, contact the bank or sender immediately. Monitor the affected accounts and consider stopping payment or replacing the card.

📹 Save any evidence. Doorbell cameras, security footage, photos, dates, approximate times and locations could help investigators connect multiple incidents.

🔒 If sensitive personal information was taken, keep an eye on your credit and consider placing a credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus.

If you’ve recently had mail disappear or found discarded mail in this part of the Terrell/Poetry area, we’d like to hear about it. Send Everything Terrell the general location and approximate date so we can determine whether these reports extend beyond this area.

Another close call on FM 986. 😳

A follower sent us this dashcam video after a vehicle pulled out directly in front of them while they were traveling north on FM 986, a few miles north of Terrell High School.

The video comes following last week’s school bus-involved crash at FM 1565 and FM 986, putting another spotlight on safety along this stretch of road.

Thankfully, this one ended with a close call instead of a crash.

Whether you’re pulling onto FM 986 or already traveling it, take that extra second and look twice.

If you hear more gunshots than usual around Terrell starting today, there’s a good chance this is why. 🕊️

Dove season opens September 1 across our area, so folks—especially around rural parts of Terrell and Kaufman County—may notice an increase in gunfire.

And one important reminder from Terrell PD: discharging a firearm inside Terrell city limits is illegal.
