SUMMER IS ZOOMING BY...That's the theme of this week's VPJ as we recap the activities from last weekend, Vettemilion and All Washed Up. However, our main story is the one that everyone has been speaking of for a week, the tragic homicide on Ferndale last week. We give Chief Hartung's report to council...and for those who feel like they're in the old Frogger video crossing Liberty near the VBC, there's talk of a new crosswalk...and attention businesses on Liberty that don't have a sidewalk or put it on hold - council is restarting a program that was put on hold for the Liberty Ave projects that are now long completed...and Mayor Jim writes about recent events in V-town...And, our B.A.D. - in the paper edition of the VPJ, the band for this week's Live At the Lighthouse is incorrect. It's The B.A.D. Band. It is correct in the digital version. Don't let summer speed by without your community news. VACATION STAYCATION...It's summertime in V-town, and since we've had relatively few meetings to attend, we turn our attention to all the great things going on here. First, don't forget everything going on this weekend right here - Corvettes, All Washed Up, a Rotary Pancake Breakfast, a Market in the Park, and the summer debut of Live at the Lighthouse (you can't say you're bored). We've got the details...then, we DID have a city council meeting, at which the Erie County EMA director was on hand to explain last week's rail incident on the Vermilion River...and in other city news, get ready for restrooms at Sherod Park (finally)...and the city turns in another clean audit report...Don't let the summer speed on by without your community news. SWINGING INTO THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND...and we really do mean swinging as this week's VPJ features the new fitness/playground equipment currently being installed at Showse Park. We sat down with Ward 4 Councilman Jeff Lucas, who gave us the details...then, we also say hello & introduce V-town to one of its own, Melanie Wood, Vermilion City Council's new clerk...then, we say goodbye to VHS baseball coach Jeff Keck, who is retiring after more than 500 wins and 37 years on the field...then, Chief Hartung tells civil service although his retirement date is in 2026, he's not sure he will make it until that date as the private sector is knocking....don't let the fireworks displays keep you from catching up on your community news. "PIERING" INTO THE FUTURE OF V-TOWN'S WATERFRONT...That's the theme of this week's VPJ as county, state, and federal officials were here to acknowledge the completion of $23 million in projects along our city's waterfront...then we go to Parks Board, where more than a few projects are underway such as pickleball courts, restrooms at Sherod Park, and the Showse Park improvements...and remember all the drama about the flag pole at Showse? Done, as the board and vets hammer out a compromise...and then we go to V-township, where voters are going to be asked to support the fire department on the ballot at more than three times the current rate, and audience members question trustees about the latest zoning happenings and the credentials of its inspector...Summer's here! NO RAIN ON THE FISH PARADE...Yes, it rained. No, the weather didn't cooperate on Friday and early Saturday. But that didn't matter as the sun shown brightly for the rest of the weekend and the 59th Annual Festival of the Fish went off without a hitch. Thanks to all the chairmen, donors, volunteers and community members and groups that make this festival swim on year after year. We've got the details. And from council, more MPO grant money comes in for Vermilion Road...and speaking of grant money, Mayor Jim gives a rundown of how much has come into the city in 7.5 years. Summer's almost here and the news is hot off the presses. Subscribe today! A TALE OF TWO TOWNSHIPS AND A CITY...This week's VPJ is definitely news driven as we've got news from the city and both townships. First, the city looks into possibly entering the EMS business...then, despite citations from the EPA and Corps of Engineers, V-township's administrator/zoning inspector issues a certificate of compliance to a Cherry Road property owner...and on the other side of the city in Brownhelm Township, trustees look to create a land use and zoning plan...and now that council has given the public back some funds, the administration warns the state is looking to possibly take some of them...and Planning makes recommendations about cannabis to council...and don't forget about this weekend's 59th Festival of the Fish! GET READY! THE 59TH FESTIVAL OF THE FISH IS ALMOST HERE! With the theme of "Fishing in the 80’s – Big Hair & Mulletmania," it's time to get out the Aqua Net, tease the hair a bit, and come to this weekend's Festival of the Fish, sponsored by the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with numerous (and we do mean numerous) businesses, organizations, and volunteers. As we do every year, the Vermilion Photojournal partners with the Chamber to distribute the section that includes EVERYTHING going on over the weekend. The online version of the festival section is already available to subscribers on the VPJ website, however, coming to a mailbox near you (yes, everyone in V-town!) for the paper version. It proves to be a weekend like no other!

GRADUATION DAY...That's the theme of this week's VPJ as the Vermilion High School Class of 2025 turns the page on its academic career here and moves on to a new phase of life...then, notice all the construction going on in VOL and now, starting Monday, on Sunnyside? We've got the latest from the city engineer about these projects and more...then, Port Authority is in the midst of some improvement projects. Find out all the latest. And Mayor Jim, never one to mince words, gives an update on all the developers who want to build in V-town. And, for future promo, we just put the finishing touches on our Festival of the Fish guide for Father's Day weekend. It will be coming to a mailbox/online soon. MEMORIAL MEMORIES...That's the theme for this week's paper as we pay homage to those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms, featuring the photography of our own Ingemar Svala...and it's that time of year - we've got the top ten academic scholars from Vermilion High School featured...then on to parks board, as our city parks are full of activity - some beautiful signage on the ugly pump house at Main Street, an alternate use for the scoreboard at Sherod paying homage to some V-town notables, and the argument, on social and in public, about flag placement at Showse...and finally, a personal goodbye to Clerk of Council Gwen Fisher...she has helped the cause of community news over the past 31+ years, and we do a shoutout as she begins her much-deserved retirement...Don't start the summer without taking your community news with you - hard copy or digital. THE PEOPLE'S PARK...That is the focus of this week's VPJ as we have all the highlights (and some great Scott Dommin photos) from Sunday's dedication of Main Street Beach & Park. Also, this weekend marks Memorial Day, and both the city and Brownhelm have services, and even a parade and hot dogs served by trustees! And we have a date for Woollybear (actually, not too hard to figure out as the Brownies will be across the pond on that date), and the mayor has a lot to say this week - and also, at council comments on the potential of the township taking back its own building department...and we also have Flags on Liberty, a really "concrete" donation for Showse, and some pics from Third Thursday.
