FALLING INTO THE NEWS...There's a lot of news - drama, laughter, info, you name it. This week's VPJ features the ongoing saga at V-Township, where the chair reads a letter "to everyone" in response to last meeting's event spectacle where Zoning Inspector Joe Baxter was thrown out....then, we switch to city council, where a councilman and the mayor spar over size (of the police station)...then, in his sometimes controversial buy always read column, the mayor talks about the good old days in V-town, the building department, and the VOL lateral project, and it's homecoming season, and new advisor Christine Reynolds gives us the full slate of activities for the week. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS...Another year has begun for the Vermilion Local School District, and with it the return of Friday night football at Sailor Stadium. Our fearless VPJ photog Scott Dommin took some fantastic shots (since we have limited space, he's going to post them on social) of Friday's victory over Margaretta...and speaking of the schools, some students nominated their teachers as "Shining Stars" and we have the winners and what their students wrote...and to the city, we have the progress on the 6119 sewer project, which Mayor Jim also addresses in his column, as well as some new from Finance Director Amy about the city's financial progress...The cold weather is around the corner. THE SUN RISES ON A NEW SCHOOL YEAR...The Vermilion Local School District has begun a new year, and the VPJ is catching up on some much talked-about topics around town, the first of which is the outcome of the second V-Township BZA hearing on the certificate of compliance issued by its administrator/zoning inspector, at which county officials fired back at statements made during the first hearing...then, with all the new activity in the immediate downtown, council debates narrowing lane traffic as pedestrian traffic increases, and it looks like golf carts will remain where they are as the police chief says ORC dictates speeds. OWENS IS MAYOR IN JANUARY...As we said in our spoiler alert last week, Russ Owens will be the city's mayor following former mayor Anderson's withdrawal from the election, and there will be contests for school board, both townships, judge, and Ward 4 in November (BTW, we WILL have a questionnaire for Mr. Owens in the coming weeks)...that highlights our news this week as we have stories from council, Brownhelm, and some interesting things from Planning...we are also pleased to welcome the 12 new staff members of the Vermilion Local School District, who were introduced at a Vermilion Chamber Luncheon last week...and Planning asks council to consider rezoning land behind The Nest for housing....the VPD makes a push for some technology from other departments that helped solve some recent cases, and the mayor has some potty talk about the VOL sewer project...Whether it's online or snail mail, we have you covered. AND THEN THERE WAS ONE...Our VPJ publishing deadline came a day before the filing deadline for the November election, so we'll follow up next week, but, spoiler alert, former mayor Jean Anderson has withdrawn from the race, so Russ Owens is unopposed for mayor in November. There are contests for Ward 4, Brownhelm Township and Vermilion Township, and there are seats to be filled for Vermilion Board of Education and Ward 1. We have the talk of the town for the week - the Mickey Mart accident and the shooting suspects, as well as how the public can help "Fund the Fish" at Showse Park. Also, there's a very "grave" situation at Maple Grove Cemetery, as the city is nearly sold out of plots, and an alternative has been brought forward. SUMMER MOVES ON...There has been a lack of meetings, so we are taking the opportunity to catch up before the schedule reboots next week for August...first, the V-township BZA puts the appeal of the zoning inspector's decision on hold until more info is obtained, with another hearing scheduled for Aug. 12...and speaking of township, Aug. 6 is the deadline to be on the November ballot, and the number of individuals running for V-township trustee tops any other office thus far...and Vermilion High School will have a new principal and assistant principal heading into the 2025-26 school year....and good, bad, indifferent, we have the latest Mayor Jim column...and don't forget all the events and activities going on this weekend - Beach Market, Chalk It Up, two concerts, and more.
