In 2025, the Victoria West Warriors football team is making a transition at the most important position on the field. Last year’s senior starting quarterback Dominick Martinez passed for 3,007 yards and accounted for 26 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing scores. The Warriors are in the process of looking for someone to replace that production in the starting lineup.

Marilyn Powell of Goliad has dealt with screwworms before. As a young girl, she saw the way the fly larvae reeked havoc on her family’s livestock, she saw the devastation it brought to the cattle industry back in the 1970s. She never wanted to see one again, but as an infestation of New World Screwworms makes its way up through Mexico, she may once again have to face the nasty little maggots.
