DISCLAIMER / APPLE—This show is mesmerizing, intense, and compelling. The three arcs, with different characters, are fluid and intersect with the central conflict. The contrast between the main character and who she is when we enter the story, as it conflicts with who she was in the past, draws you in. I am adding it to my new course.

When you feel the weight of the dilemma, it transcends your story. A substantial dilemma sets up the internal and the external story when the protagonist makes a choice. We feel the central conflict.

Do you have a compelling question at the start that links to an emotional answer at the end of your story? Do we feel the shift in your protagonist?

On our way back from South Africa and being a part of Screenwriters Safari, we had the blessing of staying in NYC for a few days. We stayed at a phenomenal hotel called 1 Hotel Central Park. They have a beautiful philosophy, "It's more than a hotel; it's a philosophy and a platform for change." They are all about sustainability, body, mind, and soul. We loved our stay there.

I had not been back to NYC since I attended Upfronts in 2003. The city was so magical. We walked and walked and visited so many different sides of it, including Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Midtown, and Chelsea/Greenwich Village.

WRITERS—We've all heard the saying, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Our emotional truth is something that cannot be refuted. Only we know what we feel and experience. Here is my latest exploration of how writers can utilize their emotional truth more. Please feel free to share. 🙏 💕

Emotional Truth: The Gateway To Your Voice

When you tap into your emotional truth, you help us see ourselves in your writing. We connect. We may all have different stories, but our emotions are similar in how we respond. Emotional truth is a source code that defines and separates your voice from the masses. It is uniquely yours and gives your characters a sense of depth and dimension. I will share a few exercises on how you can further tap into your emotional truth in your writing.

I started seeing the value of emotional truth as a studio executive early in my career. I went through a divorce after a long relationship ended in a short marriage. It was somewhat public on a small scale because my ex was in the entertainment industry. Betrayal is what triggered it. I remember waking up the morning after the discovery when I had to return to work. There was a feeling of shame and isolation. I felt unfamiliar with my new reality. How could this happen? Were the signs there all along, but I failed to see them? I felt humiliated, yet he was the one who cheated. I had to move forward, put on a happy face, and act like everything was fine. I was angry. I was hurt. I was experiencing a myriad of emotions.
