The Johnston school administration and representatives from Zum Bus Transportation spent last weekend working out a plan to solve bus-route issues that caused hours-long delays in student drop-offs and gridlock congestion in the parking lot at the new, consolidated elementary school last week.

In a letter to parents sent Sunday, Johnston Schools Supt. Scott Sutherland said he “directed Zum Transportation to completely redesign elementary school bus routes.”

“Through the weekend and today, our district team has remained in close communication with Zum, including hourly meetings today, to review the new routes, timing, capacity and implementation plan,” Sutherland wrote. See comments for story.

The review of a proposed seven-unit condo complex at the corner of Central and Atwood avenues was tabled at Tuesday’s Planning Board meeting and the applicant told to return with a full plan of concept in detail at the Oct. 6 meeting with clear answers to traffic concerns, maintaining the area’s “town” feel and aesthetics.

A few neighbors had their say Tuesday night and did not mince words. And, taking a different perspective, so did the board’s lawyer.

“I think this is going to be a s*** show,” said Joann Joseph, who lives across the street from the property. “I was born and raised in Johnston. It’s been built up over the years. I live in a town, not a city, and everything else in this area is one house or two family. It’s just too much.”

It’s a messy job, but the result is beautiful.

Under a perfect, late-summer blue sky, about 100 volunteers showed up at Verde Vineyard on Saturday to help with the annual harvest of the grapes.

Picking in the fields began at about 8 a.m. and wrapped up a couple hours later, and everyone enjoyed some 2025 Chardonnay, a 2024 Cayuga White, a 2024 Bianco d’Amelia and a 2024 Itasca with a tasting and an Italian feast from Luigi’s Restaurant.

Jim Verde, owner of the vineyard, said this year’s picking went very smoothly and everyone was done sooner than he expected.

In all, about three tons were picked, but the work to crush the grapes and get them into the fermenting vats went on a little longer. See comments for story.

A long-adored, local mom-and-pop landmark in Cranston is about to take its last mulligan.

After more than 25 years in business, Mulligan’s Island announced last Wednesday that it has agreed to sell its 64-acre property at 1000 New London Ave., and the operating business, to Golf Ranch, a growing network of technology-enabled driving ranges with six locations nationwide.

According to their press release, the transaction is expected to close on Monday, Sept. 21. The facility's final day of operation under current ownership will be Sunday, Sept. 20, and construction on the renovated facility is scheduled to begin the week of Monday, Sept. 21.

With early voting starting on Aug. 20, voters in Johnston took advantage at the Johnston Land Trust, located at 509 Greenville Ave.

Sharon O’Brien, a Republican, wanted to vote early simply for the convenience because she’s got a busy schedule and believes it’s very important to vote.

“I’ve got some big concerns,” she said. “The cost of fuel, the honesty of the candidates, voter fraud. And I’m worried about the refunding of the police, taxes being raised, freedom of speech and the education of our kids.”

The 118th Feast of La Madonna della Difesa will kick off at Our Lady of Grace Church on Wednesday Sept. 9 with a Mass and candlelight procession. The evening’s events are the start of a weekend of celebration and reflection.

“It’s a great community feast, and people come from all over, not just from Johnston,” said Rev. Richard Narciso, pastor of Our Lady of Grace.

Joanne Burley, an event organizer, who has been planning all year, called it a “beautiful event.”

“There’s the first mass on Wednesday, followed by the candlelight procession,” said Burley. “On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the event continues with plenty of food, games, raffles and rides. The second Mass on Sunday is also followed by a procession with the statue of the Madonna carried through the neighborhood.” See comments for story

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League pushed girls flag football across the goal line on Monday afternoon, sanctioning it as the state’s newest varsity sport after 16 schools successfully petitioned to have it added in the 2027 spring season. Rhode Island becomes the 24th state in the country and the first in New England to introduce girls flag football on the varsity level.

It was introduced as a club sport back in 2024 with Johnston being the first team assembled in the state. More teams joined in and put together a pilot season last spring, which culminated in a 10-team state tournament at Johnston High School in June. More than 400 players were rostered by season’s end.
