After winning $80 million, I went into a coma before I could claim the money — while my family discussed ways to split the fortune, convinced I couldn’t hear... That was when I pulled ONE LAST LAUGH.
At age 65, my existence had centered on being helpful. Even my son-in-law once said, "Helen is basically an ATM with wrinkles."
There was laughter all around. I laughed too.
That Tuesday morning, I bought a lottery ticket with my last $12.
Come dinner, my number appeared. $80 million.
My hands shook and I dropped the remote. I signed the ticket, hid it in the lining of my old red coat, and whispered, "Finally."
Suddenly my chest tightened. The ground rose. Darkness fell.
When I regained consciousness, I couldn’t move. My eyes didn’t open. The machines beeped.
But every word reached me.
Claire, my daughter, was first to cry.
"She’d better not have hidden that ticket somewhere stupid!"
My son Daniel sighed. "If she dies before it’s claimed, we should know who gets control."
My sister whispered, "She was always dramatic. Even now, she’s keeping us waiting."
Then Frank, my husband, leaned to my ear.
Forty years of calling me his "sweet girl."
That time, he said, "Wake up, Helen. OR DON’T. Just tell us where the money is first."
Only Lily, my granddaughter, visited each night, with gentle hands and a trembling voice.
"Grandma," she said, "I don’t care about the money. I want you to squeeze my hand."
Three days after, I opened my eyes.
Family members hurried over with flowers, pretended tears, and soft voices.
"Oh, we were so worried!"
"My darling Helen, I stayed by your side!"
I pretended to be frail. Thankful. Forgetful. For two weeks.
Then I had them all come to my hospital room, a lawyer by my bed.
Claire reached for my hand.
"Mom, what’s this about?"
Slowly, I sat up.
"Everyone’s here for my winnings," I said.
Suddenly, the room went quiet.
"But you overlooked ONE DETAIL."
The lawyer faced them, holding my red coat in his arms.
He took something out of the lining — and every breath seemed to stop.
You won’t believe what happened next…
