If you’re a canine professional, you’ve probably heard of The Canine Ladder of Aggression, but do you know where the idea originally came from?

Kendal Shepherd is a veterinary surgeon who has studied canine behaviour for many years. Her passion is the prevention of dog bites incidents in all ages, but particularly in children. She developed The Canine Ladder of Aggression to illustrate which dog body language gestures are designed to reduce stress and avert danger.

The Canine Commandments (2nd Edition) guides children, and the adults they live with, to interact more safely with dogs and to minimize the risk of dog bites. The ‘commandments’ are simple to understand and relevant to all children, whether they already live with a dog or not.

This revised second edition of Kendal Shepherd’s well known book on dog behaviour includes her famous ladder of aggression and additional new features – quizzes, learning objectives and a glossary – to further engage children, and to support discussion and teaching in classroom settings.

The Dogwise warehouse hosted an AKC Detective Dog test for the Wenatchee Kennel Club this week. Who knew that boxes of books, wooden pallets and our large open basement would be such a great place to test!

WKC instructor, Carla Slabaugh, set up the test. You might recognize Carla and her Vizsla from the cover of the Dogwise title “From Bird-Brained to Brilliant” about how to succeed in training sporting dogs to be great companions. It was fun to see these super-smart dogs in action.
