Dolly Parton, who died today at age 80, leaves behind one of the most extraordinary careers in American entertainment. From her humble beginnings in the mountains of East Tennessee, she became a country music legend, acclaimed songwriter, actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist whose career spanned more than six decades.

Parton gave the world classics including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You.” She became the best-selling female country artist of all time, starred in films including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, built Dollywood into one of Tennessee’s best-known attractions, and established the Imagination Library, which has provided books to children around the world. Her honors included 11 Grammy Awards and induction into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Her final years also brought personal loss. Her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, died in March 2025. Just four days before her own death, Parton told PEOPLE that she had been dealing with health issues she had neglected while caring for Carl. She acknowledged experiencing some difficult health challenges but remained characteristically determined to keep working.

Even then, Parton was looking forward rather than backward. She was developing a new Nashville museum and hotel, working on a Broadway musical about her life and pursuing other projects. Days before her death, she told PEOPLE that despite still healing, she was still working and had “so many things I want to achieve.”

That determination seems a fitting final note for a woman whose life was defined by faith, family, hard work, generosity, humor and an unwavering pride in where she came from.
