Everyone’s asking — WHY did Yonge-Dundas Square become Sankofa Square? Here’s the actual reason 👇 Comment below so we can talk about it.

The City of Toronto voted to rename Dundas Street, Dundas Station, and Yonge-Dundas Square after reviewing the legacy of Henry Dundas — the Scottish politician the street was named after in the 1790s. City reports cited his role in delaying the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

The square was renamed Sankofa Square in 2024. Sankofa is a word from the Akan language of Ghana meaning “to go back and get it” — learning from the past to build a better future. The TMU Station name you see now (formerly Dundas) was part of the same renaming process.

So what do YOU think — do you like Sankofa Square or will you still call it Yonge-Dundas?
