What a ride! 🚀

Our 2025 summer journalism course is officially over – and it was full of international energy, new friendships, and unforgettable experiences.
For two weeks in July, participants from the U.S., Germany, Bosnia, Türkiye, and Czechia came together in Prague to learn what it takes to become a foreign correspondent. They worked side by side, reported real stories from the streets, and got direct feedback from professionals with years of experience in the field.

They met journalists from The Financial Times, Czech TV, Denník N, and other top media outlets. They visited Radio Free Europe and Seznam newsroom, built cross-border friendships, and pushed their storytelling skills to the next level. 🌍📸✍️

The best part? One of their stories has already been published!

We’re already working on the 2026 edition — and we can’t wait to welcome the next group of young storytellers.
🌞 Join us next summer and go on assignment with us!

Meet Kateřina, our Grant Officer at Transitions 👋🏻.
She’s the person behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly — from the very first proposal draft to final reports. Her role as a grants administrator touches every stage of the project lifecycle 🔁.

When asked what skills are most important in her work, Kateřina highlights the ability to pay attention to detail while still keeping the bigger picture in mind. It's this balance that helps her navigate complex funding processes and ensure projects stay on track 👍🏻.

One piece of advice she offers, especially to those working in fundraising and development, is to learn when to say no.
"In my field, you see many 'yes people' who say yes to almost every funding opportunity. But it's just as important to step back and ask if the effort is really worth it. Learning to say 'no' can be a smart, strategic choice."

What about you? Have you ever found yourself in a situation where saying no turned out to be the right choice?

When he arrived in Prague, our former intern wasn’t quite sure what path to take after college. He had a general interest in media — but it was during his internship that something shifted.

💬 “I had been blissfully unaware of the legal obstacles confronting journalists... I’ve since realized that the most meaningful way I can make an impact is by becoming a media law attorney.”

From interviewing journalists across Eastern Europe about press freedom to discovering a new purpose, his time with Transitions was full of unexpected lessons.

He now works as a journalist at an NBC station in Kansas — with a clear vision for the future.

🎉We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our first Complicating the Narrative (CTN) pilot at Transitions!

This marks a necessary next step in our mission to support more nuanced journalism that serves the public in polarized times. We’re kicking off this pilot with five inspiring newsrooms that are each embedded in distinct media landscapes: Storyteller (Serbia), eTrafika (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Heroine (Czech Republic), Moldova.org (Moldova), and Panorama (Romania).

At a time when binary framing, outrage, and sensationalist storytelling dominate headlines, journalists need tools to report differently 🗞️. CTN equips journalists with tools to listen differently, amplify internal contradictions, and go beneath the surface of polarizing issues to find deeper motivations and more complete stories. In today’s world of deep divisions and collapsing trust in the media, the ability to complicate, not simplify, the narrative is essential.

👋 Say hi to Meenal—Solutions Journalism Trainer & Programme Manager at Transitions💡

Meenal helps journalists rethink how stories are told—moving beyond problems and towards progress. At Transitions, she leads our solutions journalism programs and works with newsrooms and freelancers across Europe to bring more depth, nuance, and constructive approaches into everyday reporting.

She originally began her journalism career in India, her home country, where she covered politics and policy. Her passion for journalism eventually brought her to the Netherlands, where she’s now based.

🗣 “I care deeply about the impact journalism can have—when it informs, empowers, and inspires meaningful change,” she says.

And her advice? Recognize your assumptions, stay curious, listen deeply, and be willing to unlearn. And stop measuring your worth by surface-level metrics. Meaningful impact isn’t fleeting digital validation—it’s about trust, nuance, and the change your work sparks in someone’s life.
