Almost 70 per cent of the projects selected for public funding in 2026 by Poland's Łukasiewicz Research Network (Łukasiewicz) concern defence, security or dual-use technology, up from just over 10 per cent two years ago. At the defence exhibition in Kielce the network is showing what that shift has produced: Tarantula reconnaissance robots due for delivery to the Armament Agency this autumn, the heavy HUNTeR unmanned ground vehicle configured to lay anti-tank mines remotely, the Piorun man-portable air defence system mounted on an unmanned platform, and an explosive based entirely on Polish technology. For the domestic defence industry it signals that the country's largest network of research institutes intends to be a supplier of finished products rather than a scientific partner only 📡

WB Electronics, the lead company of Poland's WB GROUP, and Norway's Kongsberg Gruppen signed a cooperation agreement on unmanned maritime systems on 8 September, the opening day of the 34th MSPO defence exhibition in Kielce. The agreement covers joint development, integration and production of unmanned maritime platforms carrying multi-sensor reconnaissance suites, with provision for fitting them with effectors to engage surface vessels. For Poland's defence industry it is the first partnership of this scope between the country's leading drone manufacturer and the supplier whose Naval Strike Missile already arms the Polish Navy's coastal missile squadron and has been selected for the Miecznik frigates 📡

Three Iranian tankers were attacked on Saturday, one of them sunk in the Gulf of Oman, while transits through the Strait of Hormuz are running at around six vessels a day against a pre-war norm of 85. That is day 191 of the US-Iran war as seen from the bridge of a tanker or gas carrier: war-risk premiums at several dozen times pre-crisis levels, P&I clubs withdrawing cover, and Gulf crude moving in a relay of shuttles and ship-to-ship transfers rather than on regular voyages 🌊 U.S. Central Command

A single fixed rotor sail, 35 m high and 5 m in diameter, will be installed in mid-2027 on one of A.P. Moller-Maersk's 8,700 TEU Lima-class container ships, in what the company and its supplier ANEMOI Marine Technologies describe as the first rotor sail installation on a container vessel. For liner operators the announcement matters less for the fuel saving of one rotor than for the segment it enters: wind-assisted propulsion has so far been retrofitted mainly to bulk carriers and tankers, where deck space and air draught are easier to manage than under a stack of containers and a quay crane 🚢 Maersk

The Italian Navy's sail training ship Orsa Maggiore, carrying third-year cadets of the Naval Academy in Livorno, has met the command and logistic support ship Etna in the Atlantic. Orsa Maggiore is bound for Lisbon on the return leg of a summer training campaign that this year took it as far as London; Etna is heading for Porto with the academy's second-year cadets. The Italian Navy announced the encounter on its official social media channels without giving a date or position 🌊 Marina Militare

Less than two years ago Kashubia was a slogan from a press conference in Gdynia. Today it is Norway's Kongsberg planning two plants on the Polish coast, a Gdynia hall for the counter-drone systems of Advanced Protection Systems, satellite radars from Eycore and a Korean investment in West Pomerania, with Rheinmetall, X-Energy and Saab waiting in line. Behind them stand the hundreds of billions of zlotys Poland will spend on defence this decade, including nearly EUR 44 billion from the EU's SAFE instrument, and one thesis our interviewee repeats like a mantra: this money must stay in the country and build the Polish economy 📊 Maciej Samsonowicz

On 2 March 2026, at the Île Longue base near Brest, the French president announced a new, extended reading of France's nuclear doctrine: forward deterrence, extending its reach to Paris's European partners. Eight states, including Poland, responded positively, and Romania was invited as the ninth. Contrary to some commentary, this is neither a nuclear umbrella in the sense of a guarantee nor a European version of NATO's nuclear sharing. It is a strategic message in which France recognises the security of Europe as its vital interest while retaining full and exclusive control over the decision to use nuclear weapons. Its value to allies depends on one thing: whether it proves credible in the eyes of Moscow 🌊

During the morning ceremonies marking the 87th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War at Westerplatte, Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke about Poland's abandonment in 1939 and about today's threats. He said the coming months, this autumn and winter, may prove decisive for the independence of Ukraine, but also for the security of Poland and the entire free world, and warned against the consequences of concessions to Russia. He also appealed for unity above political divisions, recalling that the defenders of Westerplatte had one uniform and one order 🇵🇱

During the morning ceremonies marking the 87th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War at Westerplatte, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz spoke about the lesson a modern state should draw from September 1939: the defenders' courage knew no limits, it was the supplies that had limits - and he declared that there must never again be a Poland that had only courage. The minister listed a 220,000-strong army under arms and annual security spending of PLN 200 billion, around EUR 46 billion, and warned that a modern war will not begin with a battleship's salvo but, for example, with a cut cable on the Baltic seabed 🇵🇱 Ministerstwo Obrony Narodowej
