On what should have been a sunny Sunday evening celebrating RDS golden tickets and superb 🇮🇪 performances at home and abroad, the Irish equestrian community instead finds itself united in heartbreak following the tragic loss of Shane Dalton. It is hard to find the right words.
Over the years, the Bit-Media team has had the privilege of watching Shane in action at Maryville, Millstreet and many of Ireland's leading venues. Although I didn't know him well, from behind the camera, I recognised not only an immensely talented horseman, but someone whose quiet professionalism, humility and kindness lit up every arena he entered.
Shane possessed a rare ability to bring out the very best in young horses. His skill, patience and horsemanship helped shape the careers of countless future stars, while his own achievements, from representing Ireland internationally to victories at the RDS and beyond, spoke for themselves. Yet he always carried those successes with remarkable modesty.
Shane's passing is a heartbreaking reminder that it's okay not to be okay. If you're struggling, please tell someone. You matter, and there is always someone who wants to listen. Equally, let's all make the effort to check in on those around us. Sometimes the smallest gesture or simplest conversation can make the biggest difference.
Our thoughts are with Shane's parents Richard and Norma, his sisters, brother, wider family, friends, supporters and the entire Irish show jumping community at this unimaginably difficult time.
Rest in peace, Shane. You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. TR 💙
