A massive fire broke out at Jomo Kenyatta Boys' High School in Bahati, Nakuru County, destroying several buildings, including dormitories and classrooms.

A 16-year-old student at Thika High School has died following an incident at the school on Friday night, with police launching investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Grade 10 student, identified as Mohamed Hare, was reportedly involved in an altercation before collapsing. He was rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigators are working to establish exactly what happened, as conflicting accounts have emerged over the incident.

Preliminary reports indicate the student may have sustained a fatal head injury after falling during the confrontation.

Detectives have since visited the school, documented the scene and recorded witness statements.

The body was transferred to General Kago Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

A fellow student is being held to assist with the investigation as police continue gathering evidence and urge the public to wait for the outcome of the inquiry before drawing conclusions.

The family wants the school to release CCTV footage they believe could reveal exactly what happened to their son on the night of the incident.

Health CS Aden Duale on Friday presided over the Phase II disbursement of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Programme in Garissa County. The event was held at the Garissa Regional Commissioner's Residence.

A total of 5,405 young entrepreneurs received KSh135.1 million under the programme. The beneficiaries include 3,333 youth receiving a second round of funding and 2,072 new recipients.

Speaking during the event, Duale said the programme is helping young people start and grow businesses while creating more employment opportunities across the country.

In addition to business grants, the NYOTA Programme offers entrepreneurship training, mentorship, business development support and access to markets and government procurement opportunities.

The latest rollout follows the first phase, which benefited 2,205 young entrepreneurs in Garissa. The programme is being implemented across all 47 counties to support youth-led businesses and improve livelihoods.
