I think about that a lot, running this business.

Not in a grand way. In a very ordinary way. Because a lot of the wāhine I work with are running businesses that would not have been possible for their nannies, and they're still apologising for taking up space. Still saying "sorry, this is probably a silly question."

It's never a silly question.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is on this week. Ake, ake, ake. A forever language. 🌱

Here's a business version of that kaupapa for you.

Your systems have a language too. The names you give your files, your folders, your job numbers, your invoices. Right now that language probably lives in one person's head, which means the business only really works when that person is available.

Write it down. One page. "This is how we name things here."

That's it. That's the whole tip. It takes twenty minutes and it's the difference between a business that runs and a business that runs on you.

Language keeps things alive. Yours does too.

It is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori this week, and the first Ara Hui lands inside it on Thursday.

That was not planned, but I will take it.

Something I want to be clear about, because people ask. Ara is grounded in te ao Māori, it is not decorated with it. That means whanaungatanga before the mahi. We take the time to know who is in the room before we ask anyone to open up. It means manaakitanga in how the session is held, so no one leaves feeling smaller than when they arrived. And it means aroha, which in a business context mostly looks like honesty delivered kindly.

You do not need a word of te reo to be in the room. You do not need to be Māori. You need to be a pakihi owner who is willing to say a true thing out loud.

Ara Hui is ninety minutes on a Thursday morning, once a month. Six of us, one theme, on Google Meet. Not a webinar. Not a lecture. A real kōrero with people running the same kind of pakihi as you.

I open every hui by going first. I will tell you where I got it wrong before I tell you what works. That is how the trust gets built, and that is when the real kōrero starts.

A fair question I have been asked twice this week: who is Ara Hui actually for?

It is for you if you started your pakihi because you have something real to give. You are figuring the rest out as you go. You do not have a team. And every so often you wonder whether you are the only one who finds this as hard as you do.

You are not. That is most of us. We just do not say it in the same rooms.

On the price. $75 plus GST for ninety minutes, and I set it there on purpose. The people who need this the most are usually the ones who cannot justify the expensive version, and I was one of them once. Low cost enough to say yes to. Real enough to actually shift something.

There was a stretch where I was working very hard on the wrong thing.

Busy the whole time. Full days, real work, actual clients. And underneath it a quiet feeling I kept pushing down, which was that none of this was building towards the thing I actually wanted to build.

Being busy hid it from me for a long time. That is what busy does. It feels like proof you are on the right track, when quite often it is just proof you are moving.

The fix was not working harder. It was stopping long enough to ask what I was actually setting up, and being honest about the answer.

Ara Hui runs on six themes, one a month, then the cycle starts again and goes deeper.

Getting Found. Visibility and marketing, showing up without burning out.
Getting Paid. Pricing, money conversations, knowing your worth.
Keeping Clients. Relationships, communication, retention.
Keeping Going. Sustainability, boundaries, pace.
Growing Up. Next steps, the bigger picture, what comes after this.

Kia ora, and welcome to spring 🌱

First week of September and the Wairarapa has finally stopped trying to freeze me out. New season, good time for a reset.

Here's the one I give everyone. Open your calendar. Block 30 minutes on a Friday. Call it "the sort out". Not a meeting, not client work, just you clearing the small stuff that's been rattling around your head all week.

Because most of the chaos I get called in to fix started as five little things nobody had time to look at.

Last day of August — a real story to close the month. 🔧

A builder that never really knew how his business was doing until his accountant told him, months later. By then it was history. He was flying blind and just hoping.

Set up a dead simple one-page tracker: money in, money out, what's owed to him, what he owes. Updates in five minutes a week.

Now he checks it every Friday. For the first time, he can see a slow month coming before it lands, instead of finding out when the bank balance tells him.

He said the best part isn't the numbers. It's finally feeling like he's driving. 👊

To keep the business alive, I took out a loan.

Sitting in my office looking outside and what I remember clearly is the feeling that needing the loan meant I had failed at something. Real business owners did not need propping up. That was the story running in my head.

That story was rubbish, and it was expensive. Not because of the interest. Because of how long I sat with it before I asked. Every week I spent deciding whether I was allowed to need help was a week the problem got to keep growing.

Borrowing was a decision, not a verdict. Asking is a decision too.
