The original episode was longer, but after listening again, I realized the real story was her perspective. For years, Ruth and I knew how it felt as grandparents to have grandchildren living far away, but this conversation helped me understand how it felt from the grandchild’s side too.

It’s about love, distance, missed moments, staying connected, and the importance of being intentional with family.

As far back as I can remember, there was a small plaque hanging on the kitchen wall of my childhood home on West 43rd Street in Cleveland.

It said, “𝗔𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱.”

At the time, I didn’t fully understand how powerful those words were. But now, at 66 years old, I realize my parents didn’t just hang that plaque on the wall. They lived it.

I saw them pray. I saw them read their Bible. I saw them make church and faith part of our home.
This episode is my encouragement to young parents, and also to older parents who may have a son or daughter who has drifted from the Lord.

Don’t lose faith. The seeds planted in love, prayer, and truth are never wasted.

Mother’s Day is more than flowers and one day of recognition.

This episode is personal.

I’m taking time to honor my wife Ruth, and our daughters Jennifer and Michele, and reflect on what they’ve carried for our family over the years.

And for the men listening, this is a reminder. Don’t wait to say what should be said today.

Sometimes we hold on to a season God has already moved us out of.

Not because we need to…
but because it’s familiar.

Growth often feels like loss at first.

But forward is where He’s leading.

There are seasons in life that stretch the heart in ways you never expect.

In this special episode of Only for a Season, I sit down with someone very close to my heart… my firstborn granddaughter, Katelynne.

We talk honestly about what it’s like to love family across the miles. The memories, the missed moments, the summer visits, the hard goodbyes, and the intentional effort it takes to stay connected when you can’t just drive down the street.

This conversation is real, emotional, and filled with perspective from both a grandparent and a grandchild who have lived it.

If you are a grandparent, a parent, or part of a family that is spread out, I believe this episode will speak to you.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿…𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿.
This week’s episode of Only for a Season is one of those moments for me.

𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼, 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁.

When she told me… I didn’t yell.
I didn’t argue.
I just looked at her.
What happened next… I will never forget.

This episode is not about rules.
It’s about relationship.

It’s about how our responses as fathers can either build trust…
or quietly break something in the heart of our children.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝗱… 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.
Take a few minutes and listen.

I believe it will stay with you.
Let me know your thoughts after you hear it.

Young parents, don’t let the busy years slowly steal what matters most. One of the best choices Ruth and I made early in marriage was protecting time for each other, even when money was tight and life was full. Date night doesn’t have to be fancy. It just has to be intentional. Your kids will grow up and launch, and you want to still be best friends when that day comes. Start this month. Put it on the calendar.

Some arguments are invitations, not assignments. Guard your peace and let it go.
