The Story of Zarfling Platoon
My name is Travis, and I started this childrenâs book and educational product company. I am a husband and father of three, living in Austin, TX. After serving ten years in the US Army, I chose to leave the military to try civilian life. Writing has been a passion of mine since I was in elementary school, so after several years of being an âaspiringâ author I decided to pursue my passion.
Back when I got out of the Army after a decade of service, I felt disconnected. I did not have any Army buddies around, no longer had a purpose motivating me, and I was not quite sure of a direction to take. I felt like I was standing fast. Deciding to stoke my interest in writing, I spent evenings writing in many of the coffee shops around town. I also stumbled upon the webcomic community. The talented people creating comics that so many of us find funny when escaping to social media, are those who helped me march forward. I made a few good friends along the way that are now creating with me.
Why are we called Zarfling Platoon? A zarf is that cardboard sleeve used to protect your hand while holding a hot cup of coffee. I learned this when I spent late nights writing at the 24 hour coffee shops in Austin. A Zarfling is each of us creating childrenâs books and educational products, to make topics in education easier for kids to grasp. We are a Platoon because we are a tight-knit group that provides support. We support independent creators that join the platoon by offering several publishing services. We support other veteran-owned businesses that provide products for us to display in our virtual monthly retail gathering, Zarfling Market.
