These delicate Mycena mushrooms create their own fairy garden on my wooded property, reminding me that extraordinary subjects are often right at our feet.

Thomas Dambo operates at the intersection of sculpture and architecture and has created a series of trolls that are built out of scrap wood (old pallets, twigs, debris) that interact with the environment around them. For this weeks prompt, I wanted to zoom in on the architectural brilliance of the facial features, even down to the detail of a twinkle in the wooden eye (if you look carefully, achieved by screws).

This specific troll is "Pia the Peacekeeper" that lives on Bainbridge Island and is 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall.

"Just a little more light"


Three years ago (or so), I had a humble AD200 Pro (max 200 watt-seconds - 200Ws), quickly adding a second to provide a little more light (and you can combine 2 to turn it into 400 Ws). I purchased some Paul C. Buff Alien Bees second hand, but while a good brand, was cumbersome to work with compared to the AD200s (vs the more modern versions). Wanting to keep with Godox, I purchased a DP800 and two DP400's. The DP800 in particular was intended to be used with my Westcott spotlight (top-center). However, if only I had a little more light...

My latest addition is the workhorse QT1200. This provides 1200Ws at maximum (while able to go down to 1/512th of that power, vs 1/64th for the DP series). The QT1200 can also go as fast as 1/23,400 s to freeze action. Phew.

Is it simply about rejection, or is it that even validation might not satisfy? When you're addicted to external approval, success may feel as hollow as failure. Maybe the acceptances are discarded as much as the rejections? The nightmare is the endless seeking itself.

It's good to check motivations, and put motivations in check. Is this the nightmare, or is the risk of this the nightmare?
