Forget goat yoga. Now Bend has alpaca tai chi.

Alpaca Tai Chi started in mid-July and since then, the alpacas, aged one to two, have become acclimated to the routine.

Reagan Wiley Rose, a business consultant for the ranch, said, “People come here and they are instantly smiling. It’s playful and it’s kind of a novelty. It’s very interesting to have alpacas here at all. There’s nothing like it in Bend. There’s feeding alpacas, but there’s not a lot of activities with alpacas in a private space.”

Wiley Rose said there is only one alpaca, named Valentino, that has yet to take food from someone’s hand. Each alpaca has a name — Simba is sweet and friendly while Regal Express Star, or “Reggie Star” for short, is bossy and the most food-motivated.

Alpacas are native to the Andes Mountains of South America, mainly in Peru, but Wiley Rose said they thrive in Bend’s climate. Compared to llamas, alpacas are smaller, more gentle and very rarely spit at people.
