Rodney Spicer Jr.

Classes: K-9 Stress Inoculation Prior to Deployments | Reality Based Detection Training

Rodney Spicer Jr. has conducted thousands of scent detection operations. He has watched his father train police departments as the K9 Coordinator since birth and received his first bite suit by age 12.

Rodney became a Reserve Police Oﬃcer at age 20 in Southern California. By age 22, Rodney was hired by a police department where he worked patrol for 4 years as a full-time police oﬃcer and later transitioned from a full-time police oﬃcer to a reserve police oﬃcer to pursue a career in dog training with the family business. Rodney went on to work an additional 5 years as a reserve police oﬃcer for the same agency.

Rodney is currently the Director of Operations at Gold Coast K9, who provides maintenance training for over 30 law enforcement agencies and private companies throughout the West Coast. As a Trainer, his duties include, K9 selection/evaluation, directing weekly maintenance training, dual purpose patrol/detection schools, and instructing various courses.

Gold Coast K9 has provided training to military special operations units as well as having travelled outside of the United States to provide training for Military K9 units.
They are currently the detection trainer for one of the largest theme parks in the US and has managed a covert detection program for one of the largest technology companies in the world.

Dr. Samantha Almeida is a board certified specialist in veterinary emergency and critical care. She attended Oklahoma State University for undergraduate studies and veterinary school, then went on to complete an additional five years of postdoctoral training to become a criticalist.

Since then, Dr. Almeida has moved around the country working at hospitals in New York, North Carolina and Tennessee. She first got involved with working dogs during her residency at the University of Minnesota.

Richard Vargus

Class: Canine Decontamination

Richard Vargus served in the United States Marine Corps and United States Army for almost forty years, initially retiring in 1995. Following retirement, he began an extended career in law enforcement, assuming positions in federal and local. Serving with the newly established New York FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force following the 911 attack.

In January 2005, Colonel Vargus returned to active service. Deploying to Iraq Commanding the Iraqi National Police Academy. Following this assignment, he assumed duties as the Chief of Law Enforcement for US Central Command Joint Security Office. Directing mission and force flow for theater joint military police, and contract security forces. Directing command authority for the 2000 military (US – Coalition) and contract working dogs, Customs Operations, and Protective Service Detail. Colonel Vargus frequently deployed overseas to execute command oversight.

Colonel Vargus returned to retired status in October 2012. Assuming the position as the Army Military Working Dog Program Manager. In 2018 he assumed the role as the Department of Defense Canine Program Manager. In both positions he established the global canine strategic platform, built inter-agency partnerships and provided policy for the DoD canine enterprise. As well as providing military canines supporting multiple US Secret Service worldwide dignitary protection for the President, Vice President and Secretary of State, and National Security Special Events.

Ernest Wolosewicz

Classes: SWAT/K9 Integration & Tactics | Advanced Deployment/Training Techniques for the EOD Handler

Ernie Wolosewicz is a retired 28-year veteran of the Long Beach Police department. Prior to his retirement in 2021, Ernie was the sergeant in charge of the Police Service Dog Unit and had been assigned to the SWAT team as an entry team leader. Ernie was part of the K9 detail, deploying with two dogs. His patrol / SWAT K9 partner was cross-trained in narcotics and combat tracking. His second dog was a single-purpose explosive detection canine. Ernie has been training dogs for 26 years and was the Long Beach Police Department certified trainer for patrol and detection and has handled 5 patrol dogs and two explosive detection canines in his 19 years as a handler.

The use of Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) in Long Beach was instituted by Ernie Wolosewicz. He trained the EDC and developed constantly evolving deployment techniques. He was responsible for coordinating Explosive Detection Canine deployments in the city and has extensive experience coordinating major events such as; the Long Beach Grand Prix, the Governor’s Women’s conference, the Long Beach Marathon, etc. He has also coordinated EDC deployments for VIP, like the President of the United States, the Dali Lama, and the Governor of California. Ernie Wolosewicz has worked with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Bomb Squad to develop effective command post protocols which have reduced critical response time and increased community safety.

Matthew Aitken

Class: Surviving a Tracking Ambush

Corporal Matthew Aitken has been employed by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, located in Tampa Bay, Florida since 2006. Prior to joining the K9 Unit, Corporal Aitken worked in patrol and was an operator on the SWAT team. He joined the K9 Unit in 2011 and has since become a certified K9 Trainer through FDLE as well as a K9 Team Evaluator.

Corporal Aitken has taught patrol schools and detector schools for numerous agencies throughout Tampa Bay. He has worked two dogs at the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and has competed with both dogs at USPCA Regional Trials.

In 2019, Corporal Aitken co-founded Blue Collar Training, which in its infancy offered obedience training to civilians, working with all breeds. Training included in-home customized dog training as well as group obedience with a focus on teaching owners basic dog psychology, obedience with distractions, socialization, and the benefits of marker training. Blue Collar Training has since evolved to offer training to certified law enforcement K9 handlers, focusing on muzzle training, bite work and agitation, neutralization to gunfire, and scenario-based training.
