Related to the recent property valuations, at this past Monday's BOC meeting, Chair Kirby told residents, "75 percent of what we're doing here is mandated. We can't do a damn thing about it."
The state requires Chowan to PROVIDE certain services. The state does not tell the county HOW MUCH to spend on each, or which capital projects to take on. That distinction is at the heart of this year's tax pressure on residents.

Provided is a line-by-line read of the FY 2026-27 budget against North Carolina General Statute, including the $1.87M Holmes HS debt service and the $2M economic development grant, both Board choices, neither a state mandate.

A stark reminder concerning how reliant business is on computers to run their operations. This issue affects only Microsoft Windows computers, Mac and Linux machines are not affected as it was due to a software update gone wrong.

A cyber expect highlighted; “There are going to be deaths because of this. It’s inevitable”

While it’s very important to keep your systems updated, companies that do not have a process for validating and testing theses or poor disaster planning - simply will not be able to operate.

How many businesses cannot transact if they loose internet connectivity in our area?

The problem affected airline communications, causing the Federal Aviation Administration to ground major carriers in the U.S., including American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines.

What are your thoughts retaliating to Insurance lobbyists seeking rate increases in NC?

How can you get involved concerning the potential 25.6 % rate increase for Chowan County ?- collectively raise your voice with the local, state representatives, vote for those leaders who look out for such detrimental lobbying.

There is a reason for why the state does not allow insurance companies to police themselves.

A public comment forum will be held to listen to public input on the North Carolina Rate Bureau’s rate increase request at the North Carolina Department of Insurance’s Jim Long Hearing Room on Jan. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Jim Long Hearing Room is in the Albemarle Building, 325 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603.
