“There's that saying; if you build it, they will come. They came, and we were full within three months and expanded five times to add more stalls. I think a lot of people didn't even know what dressage was, or that it was an option. And then, once they were exposed to it, they were very interested in it—there was definitely interest, and there was a need. I let anybody come with any quality horse or any breed horse, and we just trained what we had, and I still do that to this day.”

Nadine Schwartsman can hardly believe she’s living her American dream. After moving to the U.S. in 2007 as a 19-year-old looking for a way to kickstart her professional dressage career, she eventually found herself in Idaho, where she’s built her dream farm and business, Les Bois Dressage, and transformed the dressage scene in the area.

“Honestly, I saw modeling as a way to gain my own income and stay involved in riding,” she said. “I was about 6 or 7 when I started taking lessons and after many years of begging, I finally convinced my parents to buy me a pony.”

Cate Chant was 15 and coming home from school on the Toronto subway in 2006 when a photographer approached her.

While Cate was consumed by modeling, studying and riding, another Ontario, Canada, athlete was just as busy, although they didn’t yet know each other. Mike Richards was raised in Kenora and followed the classic Canadian path into hockey almost by default, as his brothers and cousins all played. By the time he was a teenager, hockey dominated his life. At 16, he left home to play in the Ontario Hockey League and by 18, he had been drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers.

“It’s the best thing that I’ve done for my riding. Being able to ride so many different types of horses has made me adaptable and more in-tune with what I’m feeling. I’d argue most importantly, it was simply more time in the saddle and more practice that made me a better rider.”

With a village behind her, including her parents and trainers, Lilly Herzog’s riding dreams that started at a local lesson barn have propelled her to her ultimate goal: committing to a Division 1 (D1) equestrian team. With her joining the University of Georgia (UGA) Bulldogs in the fall of 2027, Lilly’s road to become a sought-after catch rider and committed D1 athlete was built on trust, long hours and the generosity of people who believed in her talent.
