We love to see great things coming from our Sidelines featured equestrians!

Wherever you drive at Loch Moy Farm, you won’t be able to miss the signs that read, “Thank A Volunteer."

That's farm owner and Maryland Horse Trials organizer Carolyn Mackintosh’s philosophy. “We can't do the sport without them, and it's so important to just create a culture of appreciation. They're really what drives the sport.”

We can't think of a better way to wrap up an incredible month of celebrating our Women In Business than by highlighting our long-time editor and now editor emerita, Jan Westmark Bauer! 🎙️

"I came from a non-horsey family but I caught the horse bug early - even when I learned to walk I would crawl around the house and whinny like a horse. I had seen the neighbors horse, and that was all it took for me to become horse obsessed and a life-long horse girl.

In my early 20’s I started teaching lessons - and that continued for the next 30 plus years. In 2004 I bought a farm in Wellington and began writing for Sidelines. It was wonderful meeting riders at WEF and doing stories on them. In 2012 I became the Editor-In-Chief and it was a great ride until earlier this year when I became the Editor Emerita. Through the years I have meet so many amazing horse people and traveled to many horse shows. I love a good story, and we have done so many. I’ve become great friends with people in the horse world and my staff, writers and photographers.

I’m excited about the future because I’m writing a middle school series on two girls and their ponies, and it’s a wild, fun adventure series. It should be out later this year and the reviews are already amazing. So stay tuned for that, I’m still horse obsessed and the ride continues!"

As we near the end of our month-long Women in Business campaign, we want to recognize the hardworking marketing and editorial interns at Sidelines Magazine who are always eager to lend a helping hand!

When she was 7, Jessica Sforza had no idea that a trip to her friend’s dressage barn with their Girl Scout Brownie troop would lead to her biggest passion. Throughout her childhood and early adult life, Jess did whatever she could to be around horses — lessoning, half leasing, schooling, hacking, and working a seasonal position at a children’s summer camp for four years as a teenager, where she met her beloved paint QH, Freckles. After graduating from college, an acquaintance helped her get her first internship with HITS Horse Shows, and she's never looked back. Since then, Jess has been working hard to make a name for herself in the digital equine landscape, and has continued to collaborate with HITS in some capacity throughout the last three years — her latest being her second internship at Sidelines Magazine!

Cecilia Cole first got involved in the horse world when she finally convinced her parents to let her start riding lessons at 9 years old after years of asking and loving all things horses. Her non-horsey parents were definitely hesitant at first because she was diagnosed at a young age with a rare genetic eye disease that causes the slow deterioration of her vision over time. However, riding quickly became a huge part of her life, introducing her to an amazing community and opportunities she never could have imagined. Cecilia currently attends Centenary University in New Jersey, where she will be a junior in the fall, and continues to pursue her passion for the equine industry and grow her interest in equestrian media and journalism.

At Sidelines Magazine, we have so many talented photographers who help bring our stories to life, including Melissa Fuller, Kacy Brown, and Sophia Donohue.

Melissa got her first camera in middle school and used to go to the barn where she rode to practice taking pictures of horses. This inspired her to take a photography class in high school and start attending local horse shows to capture and sell images to riders. However, it wouldn't be until 2019 when Melissa decided to contact the former editor of Sidelines. After she let them know that she was local to Wellington, FL, and had a background in photography and riding, Melissa has been covering the publication's photoshoots ever since!

Horses have always been a huge part of Kacy's life, so combining them with photography felt incredibly natural to her. She spent the first six years of her photography career as a wedding photographer, but always found herself being pulled back toward the horse world. In 2022, a fateful first trip to Ocala, FL, changed everything when she photographed Michelle Mercier. That single experience solidified Kacy's desire to make equine photography permanent in her career, and four years later, she finds herself based in Ocala, where she had the opportunity to photograph Michelle again for this month's cover story.

Sophia grew up with a horse crazy mom, and that love quickly passed down to her and her sisters. She first fell in love with photography in high school and continued studying it through college, where horses were almost always her subject matter. Moreover, Sophia's desire to preserve the connection between horses and the people who love them is the "why" behind her want to tell stories through images. Today, she lives on her family farm in the Hudson Valley of New York, where she gets to share that same love of horses with her own daughters.

Summer Grace heads up our social and digital content here at Sidelines and is one of the newer members to the team. Growing up only an hour south of Wellington International, she found horses at the age of 7 and never looked back. As the daughter of two media industry parents and with a born love of storytelling and content production, merging her two passions seemed like the perfect fit following her college graduation where she majored in Multimedia Journalism.

After becoming a first-time horse owner at the age of 17, her heart horse entered and changed her life at the age of 21. She could often be found with her truck and trailer parked in the employee parking lot for Phelps Media Group during her internship, having run over to compete on her lunch break. The unexpected passing of this horse in 2021 led her to found her own Flaxen Mane Media which has enabled her to attend and promote some of the most beloved events across the country.

When not running from show to show, Summer can usually be found in the barn with her four-year-old ‘reincarnate’ heart horse, Golden Era and making fun content for Flaxen Mane Farm
