Governor Greg Abbott is taking a series of aggressive actions in Texas aimed at what he describes as illegal or dangerous attempts to impose Sharia law.
He has called on district attorneys, sheriffs, the Texas Attorney General, and the Department of Public Safety to investigate groups he says are operating unlawful “Sharia courts,” specifically pointing to the Islamic Tribunal in North Texas.
Abbott argues that these tribunals may be acting as de-facto courts rather than voluntary religious mediators, which he claims could violate state and federal law.
He also signed House Bill 4211, a measure intended to prevent the creation of so-called “Sharia compounds,” such as the controversial EPIC City development, which he says could impose religious rules on residents or segregate communities under religious governance.
Beyond that, Abbott designated the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations, barring them from owning property in Texas and directing DPS to investigate their activities.
Critics argue that Abbott’s actions threaten religious freedom, unfairly target Muslim communities, and may exceed his legal authority—especially since the power to designate foreign terrorist organizations usually lies with the federal government.
Supporters, however, view his efforts as necessary to protect constitutional law, public safety, and property rights.
