Starting September 27, 2026, a new EU law on environmental claims will affect any property listing that can be viewed or booked by travelers in the EU—even if the property itself is located outside the EU.
Under the new law, environmental and sustainability claims shown to EU travelers will be subject to stricter requirements. If you display an environmental or sustainability claim to EU consumers, it must be substantiated by clear, verifiable evidence or be based on a certification scheme that meets the criteria of the EU Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (ECGT). Misleading environmental claims will continue to be prohibited. Vrbo is also updating its sustainability content guidelines and how certain sustainability information provided by partners is displayed on its platforms.
To help keep your property listings compliant with the ECGT, please take the following actions before September 27, 2026:
Review your property names, descriptions, and amenities in Vrbo Owner Dashboard or with your connectivity provider.
Remove generic claims such as “eco-friendly,” “green,” and “climate-friendly” unless you can support them with clear, verifiable evidence or certification.
Where possible, replace broad claims with specific factual information, such as “EV charging available,” “some solar energy used,” or “recycling policy at property.”
Remember that you are responsible for understanding the laws relevant to your listing and for ensuring compliance with all applicable laws.
