⚡🏠 PARTIAL POWER TO AN OUTLET — LOOKING FOR WIRING ADVICE
Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone with electrical experience can help me understand what may be happening here.
I’m replacing two 3-way switches and one timer switch with newer devices. This is a flip house I purchased with the existing wiring in place, and I’m not a professional electrician. I’m happy to provide clearer photos if needed.
The issue is that I’m getting what appears to be partial power at an outlet on the same circuit. The outlet shows signs of power, but when I plug in a phone charger or another device, it either barely charges or doesn’t charge at all. I reconnected the wiring as closely as possible to the original configuration, but something may have been wired incorrectly.
There’s also a second problem involving the fan and timer switch. When I correct the outlet issue, the fan doesn’t operate properly. The timer receives power but immediately shuts off and resets. When I correct the timer/fan wiring, the outlet problem returns.
I cannot seem to get the outlet operating normally and the fan timer functioning correctly at the same time.
I’ve already tried resetting the GFCI outlets in the house and checked the visible connections to make sure they are tight and that there are no obvious crossed wires. Unfortunately, I don’t currently have a voltmeter, so I can’t verify the actual voltage at the outlet or switches.
One other concern is the existing wiring configuration, including a white conductor that appears to be used in a way I don’t fully understand. I’d also appreciate guidance on how this should be corrected properly while keeping the lights, fan, and outlet functioning as intended.
At this point, I’m out of ideas. If anyone can identify what I may be missing from the photos or explain what should be tested next, I’d really appreciate the help. ⚡🙏
