Well day 2 started off slow, the heat continued and so did the wind for our morning hunt. The rain made the birds not fly very much, but the afternoon was a different story.

After watching some football and refueling, Ace and I headed back out to our shaded spot from the night before. We ended up harvesting our limit that afternoon with some pretty close shots to boot!

When you think of your favorite duck to harvest in the fall, for me nothing beats a sunny day lighting up a mallard drake as he backpedals into the decoys. According to the USFWS BPOP mallard numbers are down 11% since 2025 and 26% for their LTA.

The North-Central US lost 10% of their May pond count while the Prairie Canada increased by 29%. Even with this decline, North Dakota Game and Fish saw an increase of 55% of brood counts in July.

Well we kicked off Day 1 in South Dakota hunting a cut silage field. After bouncing around to a few different places I found a nice transition spot where I could keep Ace in the shade. We managed to chip away at some doves for our first evening and the action only picked up in days to come! Be sure to check out our video next week to see how things turned around.
