Hope Served held a Wall-Breaking Celebration in mid April, beginning a renovation project to turn the former Manheim Mennonite Church into a workforce development center for individuals with disabilities. One of the key elements to the new center will be the Hope Served Kitchen, a teaching kitchen providing real-world experience and hands-on food service training.

"In lieu of a groundbreaking, (we had) a wall-breaking," said Steve Schwartz, executive director of Hope Served. "Breaking walls is symbolic of something much bigger. We're removing barriers to employment and creating a place where individuals with disabilities can gain job skills and find meaningful work in our community."

The Marietta Garden Tour features a unique tribute to America: a pool shaped like the Liberty Bell. Set for June 7, the tour will also highlight eight stops in and around Marietta, including a site on Donegal Place at Furnace Road where the Musselman/Vesta Furnace was built in 1868.

"It's great for getting ideas for your own yard," said tour organizer Karen Sullivan. "I think most people who come like the tour for that reason, but there's also the historic nature of Marietta itself and the houses on the tour - that's a big draw."

Advance tickets are available for a discount until June 5. See more details about the tour at https://townlively.com/gardens-and-history-bloom-in-marietta

Unlocked Closet is a place for foster and adoptive families to get what they need, consisting of 1,200 square feet of donated items such as new and gently used clothing, games, seasonal items, toys and more. The nonprofit came after a baby shower for Chelsea Clark's adopted sons was cancelled due to a lack of support.

"I wanted to do what I could to have people not feel what I felt," said Chelsea. "We started in a storage unit and quickly outgrew it. Where we're going, I don't know. I'm not in a rush to get there. I want to make sure whatever we do, we do well. Currently, we aren't doing any fundraising, but we're going to need to do it."

Manheim Township Historical Society's (MTHS) Magical History Tour will take place on June 6 at the Historic Stoner House, benefiting the nonprofit. The tour will explore 100 significant historic sites such as farms, dwellings, villages and more.

"It's a charming tour through today's landscape of Manheim Township to help people see what was once there," said MTHS president Ben Webber "With a little coaxing, I think I can get people to see what was there hundreds of years ago. There was once a perception in the community that these landmarks were just old j***y buildings. I thought, 'Let me take some people by the hand, have them look to their right, have them look to their left, and there was once a beautiful mansion there.' It'll be quite startling to those on the tour."
