MH Art Gallery & Studio in Marietta's exhibit, "In Bloom," will transform the space into a vibrant garden, showcasing 25 floral-inspired works in a variety of styles and mediums. Many of the artists featured are members of the group Marietta Art Alive, with the exhibit running through Aug. 24.

"Marianne Calenda's monotypes catch textural whispers amid muted colors, while, conversely, Melissa Carroll's bold strokes of color and use of metallic paint shout out, and Joanne McIlvaine's soft-edged visions invoke quiet contemplation," said artist Linda Mylin Ross. "Susan Darling's bright collage imagery dances to lively rhythms."

Beth Oberholtzer will discuss her new book, “Amish Weddings,” at a free community event on Aug. 7 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Lancaster. The book focuses on how Amish culture brings about its own unique approach to wedding traditions.

"(The Amish and Mennonite) are just like you and I, even though they do dress differently," said Oberholtzer. "In my books, I do try to shine a light on how we're the same as the Amish. They make decisions on how to live their lives. The Amish are not stuck in the past. Change happens, but it's more deliberate and it happens slower, and there are community aspects to the changes."

Elizabeth Dixon wishes to spotlight Drumore Friends Meeting House as a historical hidden gem, hosting open houses July 12, Aug. 9, and Sept. 13. There will be a map showing where residents lived, and visitors are encouraged to take a self-guided tour through the cemetery and to bring a picnic lunch for afterwords.

"If your family tree includes the names Shoemaker, Cutler, Smith, Ambler, and Walton, it's very likely you have Drumore Quaker ancestors that you may not know about," she said.

The annual community picnic at Ruhl's Church on July 19 will bring together church members and community members with homemade food. The main dish is the traditional chicken corn soup, featuring a recipe used for decades made from church members preparing around 550 pounds of chicken.

"Why do we hold the annual community picnic, you may ask? Well, it is a tradition. But it is also for fellowship and enjoyment," shared Gail Ruhl, picnic planning committee member. "We believe our picnic offers an informal place to see our congregation in action, working and laughing together side by side."

In May, Friendship Community's Heart Artists, comprised of local individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism, finished and hung up a mural commemorating Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum's 100th anniversary (Landis Valley Museum).

"Art is a way for everyone to communicate without speaking," said Trisha Goldsborough, Friendship Community's marketing coordinator. "We have a lot of artists who are nonverbal or have trouble communicating (verbally), and this gives them a way to talk. It's also expressing yourself. Everyone wants to be heard."
