Twin Valley School District's high school Mini-THON club recently operated fundraising activities to benefit Four Diamonds, a nonprofit aiming to conquer childhood cancer. The club's most recent fundraiser was a car wash on Sept. 20 during Honey Brook Harmony Day, with additional fundraising activities being held year-round.

"People (join the club) because it directly impacts the community," said club member Sarah Lerch. "We have families that we support in the Twin Valley community who are affected by pediatric cancer. I think it's way to help out, and (we know) that the money goes directly to pediatric cancer (research)."

The mission of Warwick Community Hub (WCH) is to lessen the effects of homelessness, sharing its goal with the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition (LCHC). WCH launched in February 2023 and has been a part of LCHC for most of the last two years.

"It's been a joy for us to connect with them," said Charis Pankratz, who's been WCH's resource coordinator for three years. "It's a way to connect with agencies. We believe we're better together. We think we're better off being able to acquire resources we didn't have. The issue of housing and homelessness is big and overwhelming. This is a way for us to work together and come together..."

Reist Popcorn Company celebrates its 100th anniversary this year and hosted a gala event in September to honor the company’s history. The now multigenerational, international business was established as the Reist Seed Company in 1925 by Alvin J. Reist on the family's 118-acre farm in Mount Joy.

"Let's raise our glass together to celebrate 100 years of popcorn magic and the people who make it possible - you," said president Mike Higgins, addressing the crowd of hundreds at the event. "To new memories and a future as bright as tonight."

Solid Rock Youth Ministries will hold a banquet on Oct. 23 at The Barn of Nottingham, benefiting the nonprofit's mission of providing Solanco-area students programs, activities and family events. Registration for the banquet closes Oct. 9.

"It started actually with my son (John)," Laura Cheek said. "He joined Solid Rock when he was in middle school, and I just loved how much they invested in our community and the things that my son was coming home being instilled by the Word of God and having others in the community outside of our church that were believers coming alongside him and helping him be the young man that he is."

Rivertown Theatre Productions will present Columbia's Haunted Lantern Tour on various times and dates from Oct. 10 through Oct. 19. With this year's tour featuring the theme "Fatality's Last Stand," the production centers on epidemics and pandemics that shaped Columbia's history.

"The theme for this year's tour grew out of reflection on a past production," shared Sara Mimnall, owner of Rivertown Theatre Productions and producer and director of Columbia's Haunted Lantern Tour. "Back in 2018, I touched on the subject of disease in a tour called 'Mortality Within,' which also explored famine, illness and the hardships of daily life. That theme stayed with me, and I knew I wanted to return to it one day with a sharper focus."

Advance registration is encouraged. To see showtimes and more details, visit https://townlively.com/history-will-glow-in-lantern-light/

The Millersville Parade returns rain or shine on Oct. 4, kicking off at 8:30 a.m. at Penn Manor High School and ending at Millersville University's Student Memorial Center. The parade is a joint effort between Millersville Borough and the university, with the 2-mile route featuring floats, animals, antique cars, local marching bands and more. A Makers Market and block party will also be held, both beginning at 10 a.m.

"It's a general generational tradition," said Lydia Yeager, Millersville University's director of events. "I hear a lot of people say they used to attend as a kid, then they brought their kids, and now they bring their grandkids. And I think from a community standpoint, it's what we connected with as far as our public mission to keep the tradition going as a legacy, with all the spectators who have embraced the event for 28 years now..."

A weekend of fun is set at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) on Oct. 10 and 11,, including the seventh annual fun run and the 44th annual auction. The fun run will allow attendees to walk or run around the WFCS campus, with the auction offering items such as home decor, gift baskets, sports memorabilia and more.

"It's just cool to be able to be a part of it, but in a different way," said Jaquelynn Hoopes of Gap, who is co-chairing the event for the first time. "All of our kids are growing up the same way we did, and then hopefully their kids will be able to come here. It's a generational thing."
