On July 25, Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) celebrated 50 years of service, featuring a number of speakers, a legacy ribbon-cutting ceremony, and tours of the facility. Akin to the event's theme "Created to Shine," the celebration aligns with the organization's goal to create a place where individuals with disabilities can grow, connect, and gain a sense of accomplishment.

"Today marks a significant milestone not only for Lighthouse but also for the community," said Liz Ackerman, executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and the event's master of ceremonies. "As you experience what Lighthouse is for those it serves - not only the participants, but the parents, the families, and the business community - you will see that Lighthouse truly is a gem within our community."

Tri-County Heritage Library is opening at its new location in Morgantown, featuring a vast selection of historical documents, artwork, photographs, newspapers and other artifacts relating to the history of Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties.

"We are still putting finishing touches on things," said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. "It took us two moves at two different times to keep everything organized. We (wanted) to put things right back on the shelves so we didn't spend months going through boxes."

Second Grace program coordinator Callie Tomblin connects young single mothers - "Graces" - with trained advocates called "Sages" to aid the mothers through life and motherhood. This aid includes transporting Graces to appointments, connecting Graces to resources such as food banks and more.

"I really believe in the social capital theory, where if people don't have resources that many of us take for granted, they are kind of behind," Callie said. "A lot of the women in our program are in that situation."

Deb Baldwin, building supervisor of Overlook Activities Center (OAC), began her journey at the skating rink 49 years ago. Baldwin continues her role with no signs of slowing down, doing a little bit of everything at the facility, including overseeing OAC's 12-employee staff.

"As long as they keep me and I can still do it, I'm going to be here," said Baldwin. "I don't know what I'd do if I'd leave here. It's like my second home. Sometimes I think I'm here more than at home."
