A new study finds that Medicare patients alone received 13.5 billion milliliters of contrast media between 2011 and 2024.

“Our study shows that a small number of imaging procedures drive the majority of contrast use. Focusing on those highest-use imaging types make meaningful changes tractable and could significantly reduce health care’s environmental footprint,” says coauthor Elizabeth Rula, PhD, executive director of the Neiman Health Policy Institute.

Today’s widely available AI models are not up to the task of diagnosing pediatric pneumonia from chest X-rays, according to a study published in Cureus.

“These out-of-the-box AI tools really don’t seem to do well at all,” says corresponding author Dr Thomas Heston, clinical assistant professor in family medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. “Overall, even if you take an average, it’s no better than a coin flip.”

A single, targeted high dose of radiation delivered before other treatments could completely eradicate tumors in most women with early-stage, operable hormone-positive breast cancer, according to a study led by UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers.

“This is a major advance in the field,” says study leader Asal Rahimi, MD. “This treatment protocol provides patients a significant time savings, spares a lot of their tissue from irradiation, and allows them to still undergo any type of oncoplastic surgery they may choose, all while very effectively treating their disease.”
