In 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division whacked the City of Miami Police Department for disproportionately mistreating and using excessive force against black and brown residents. Six years later, DOJ is still monitoring city cops.

But there are clearly still issues. . . . .

Brother of Honduran president detained in Miami for ‘conspiring to import co***ne’

Less than a year after a convicted drug lord testified that he had met with the Honduran president’s brother to discuss the repayment of debt related to a money-laundering operation, Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernandez was detained by federal agents in Miami on drug and weapons charges.

Hernandez, the brother of President Juan Orlando Hernandez, was detained Friday for “conspiring to import co***ne into the United States, and related weapons charges,” said James Margolin, the chief public information office for the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, in a statement to the Miami Herald.

Margolin said Hernandez was expected to appear in federal court in Miami on Monday.

Planning a wild spring break? ❌❌ Please don’t come to Miami Beach, city tells students
-
-
If your ideal spring break includes tequila shots on the beach, blasting music from your car at 4 a.m., and smoking a joint in public, then Miami Beach isn’t the place for you.

At least, that’s the message that the city’s police department sent to college students this week in letters warning that — after a particularly rowdy spring break last year — the island plans to crack down on behavior that hurts residents’ quality of life.

“Miami Beach has been challenged in recent years by student misbehavior during Spring Break — to the point that our police department must now take a harder line going forward,” Police Chief Daniel Oates wrote in letters that were sent to universities, fraternities, and sororities across the country. “So I am writing to ask that you assist Miami Beach in sharing with your students the following message from our Police Department: ‘If you come to Miami Beach for Spring Break, you must obey our laws. If you do not, you will be arrested.’ “

Miami named worst city for 🏡 renters in the U.S. for the second year in a row

If you feel like you’re spending way too much of your paycheck on your monthly rent, you’re not wrong.

For the second year in a row, South Florida has been named the worst metro area in the U.S. for renters. A new study by the website Apartment List shows that 62.7 percent of renter households in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach in 2017 were cost-burdened — which means they paid more than 30 percent of their income on rent. 💸💸

That’s only a tiny improvement from 2016, when 62.8 percent of South Florida households were cost-burdened.

According to the study, which uses data from the U.S. Census, 33.8 percent of renter households in the Miami metro area are severely cost-burdened — or spending more than half their income on rent.

Las Vegas shooting suspect Stephen Paddock owned a home for two years in Melbourne, a one-hour drive from his niece and brother in Central Florida.

The former accountant and Lockheed internal auditor managed Mesquite Central Park Apartments in Mesquite, Texas -- not to be confused with Paddock’s current Mesquite, Nev., residence -- before buying a brand new 1,773-foot stucco house in Lennar’s Heritage Isle development in May, 2013 for $246,000. His younger brother, Eric Paddock, and Eric’s daughter, Nicole Paddock, live in Orlando.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Some business owners along iconic Ocean Drive have banded together to fight crime in an experimental program on Miami Beach.

The 12-week pilot program called TOPS, Tourist Oriented Policing Services, put extra off-duty Miami Beach officers on the west side of Ocean Drive during busy weekend hours.

Sixty percent of the officers' overtime was paid for by business owners who are part of the Ocean Drive Association.

The city of Miami Beach paid for 40 percent: $112,000 per city records. The program expired Aug. 19.

Gordon Puts Damper On Holiday Plans In Miami Beach

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Labor Day wrapped up on South Beach 🏖️ nice and dry, much different than how the day began.

The normally-bustling Ocean Drive looked more like a ghost town earlier on Monday as Mother Nature delivered a soaking courtesy of Tropical Storm Gordon.

Business was slow. The beach was empty. The storm put a damper on so many holiday plans.

“We were planning to go out on the beach and have some fun but yesterday when we were driving we saw the gust of wind and the rain falling and we were like, ‘Ok this is not what we expected’,” said tourist Kandarp Nyatei.

Beaches were closed all across Miami-Dade because of a high risk of rip currents. From Kendall to Homestead and across South Florida, people felt the effects of the storm that formed off the Keys.

Chief fires North Miami Beach cop arrested for kicking pregnant woman in stomach

The North Miami Beach police officer accused of kicking an eight-month pregnant woman has been fired, the department announced Friday.

Officer Ambar Pacheco was charged with aggravated battery, an arrest affidavit says, after she attacked the woman in South Beach on Wednesday night.

“Due to Ms. Ambar Pacheco’s recent off-duty actions, her employment with the City of North Miami Beach has been terminated effective immediately,” Chief William Hernandez said in a statement issued Friday afternoon.

According to the affidavit, the kicking arose from a confrontation at the busy corner of Española Way and Washington Avenue around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday. On one side were Pacheco and her 21-year-old sister Mikaela Pacheco. On the other side, Liberty City couple Evoni Murray, 27, and Joseph Predelus, 40.

Miami Is America's Hardest City to Save Money as a Homeowner

Miami's cost of living remains relatively similar to that of other major, rent-crunched cities, such as Seattle and Boston. But — as New Times repeats so often it has turned into our meditation mantra — the county's median household income level, which hovers around $43,000, is significantly lower than that of any other city of similar size and relative level of economic importance.

So it's no surprise that Miamians' savings accounts are being ground into dust. Case in point: A new study released yesterday by the real-estate analysis websites RentCafé and PropertyShark shows that, among people who rent apartments, Miami is the fourth-hardest city in America to save money.

Washington Post Report: Miami Among The Worst Cities For Solving Homicides

- - -

An interactive report published on Wednesday by The Washington Post brings to light a dark fact about crime and violence in the city of Miami. The newspaper’s analysis of public records data shows that 60 percent of homicides in the city between 2007 and 2017 went unsolved, placing Miami towards the bottom of the 50 cities it analyzed.

The results vary depending on where in the city crimes happen. Nearly all homicides were solved in a particular part of Little Havana. But there are pockets of the Liberty City, Alapattah and Little River neighborhoods where less than a third of murders were solved. Those areas also saw many more homicides than other parts of the city.

Agriculture officials move to eradicate pests quickly

MIAMI — An invasive and destructive pest has been identified in the farmlands near Miami, Florida agriculture officials said Tuesday.

Three male Oriental fruit flies have been found in traps in south Miami-Dade County since Friday, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam said.

The state is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to eradicate the flies. They are considered one of the world’s most serious agricultural pests because of their potential economic harm.

The Oriental fruit fly (Bactroceradorsalis) lays eggs in more than 430 different fruits, vegetables and nuts.

Grave robbers steal bones from Miami's historic cemeteries

At first glance, a tree branch appears to have fallen into the coffin. The lid has been pried off, leaving the contents roasting, naked, in the Miami sun.

“No, that’s a leg bone. See where the foot used to be?” said Arthur Kennedy, bending down to take a closer look at the smooth, brown, contoured tibia.

Kennedy would know. He’s not a forensic scientist but he is a cemetery caretaker — who lives in the middle of a cemetery — and he’s recently seen more bones than he cares to remember.

“Here’s his belt,” Kennedy said, pointing to a rotting black strap hanging off the side, a remnant of the dignity of the dead man when he was buried in his Sunday best.

He rests in peace no more. The one bone is all that’s left of the dearly departed. His remains were likely stolen by grave robbers who use human bones in religious ceremonies or sell them on the black market.

“There’s a lot of witchcraft going on, and I’ve been offered $1,000 for a skull,” Kennedy said. “It’s inhumane how they’re attacking the dead and dismantling the graves. Our history is buried in these cemeteries.”

Last 'Co***ne Cowboy' Sentenced to Prison After 26 Years on the Run

A quarter-century after fleeing from the law, a man dubbed the last of Miami's "co***ne cowboys" was sentenced Wednesday to 11 years in prison for playing a key role in one of the biggest drug trafficking operations of the violent 1980s smuggling era.

Gustavo Falcon, 56, was a fugitive for 26 years before his capture last April living under an assumed name in Kissimmee, Florida, with his wife. Falcon, also known as "Taby," disappeared in 1991 when he was indicted along with his older brother Augusto "Willie" Falcon, Salvatore "Sal" Magluta and many others.

Gustavo Falcon pleaded guilty in February to a single co***ne distribution conspiracy charge.

City Workers Destroying Property of Homeless Miamians

The morning of April 17, Wilbur Cauley left all of his belongings in their usual place: stacked by a fence under the I-395 overpass at NW First Court and 13th Street. It was in the middle of a four-block area where about 30 homeless Miamians live. That morning, Cauley, an Army veteran in his late 50s who served three years in Germany, went to a nearby store for a soda. When he returned, he says, a man in a dark-green shirt was kicking bags that contained Cauley's birth certificate, driver's license, clothes, bedding, and even the food he keeps on hand to avoid diabetic shock.

South Florida man gets 2 years for attacking Miami airport officers

A South Florida man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for attacking two federal officers at Miami International Airport.

Documents show Lopez drove to the airport in October 2017, went inside and started yelling loudly, waving his arms and saying he would blow up the airport.

A Customs and Border Protection officer and a Transportation Security Administration officer both responded, getting into a physical altercation with Lopez that ended when one of the agents used an electric stun gun to subdue him.

Traffic trauma: Miami commutes are longer than ever for more people than ever
If you feel like your South Florida commute seems increasingly hellish these days, you're not alone.
Over the past decade, Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties have seen a whopping increase of almost 29 percent in the share of commuters who travel at least 90 minutes to get to work. That is one of the largest increases in America among big cities.
By comparison, Atlanta saw just a 14 percent increase between 2005 and 2016, while New York jumped only 15 percent.

700+ Acre Brush Fire Burning In Western Dade

Easterly winds are helping to push the smoke from a brush fire away from the Miami metro area.

At last check, the fire, near SW 8th Street and SW 137th Avenue, had burned more than 700 acres and was about 20% contained.

At this point, no structures are being threatened and traffic on the Dolphin Expressway is not affected.

Still, residents and business owners in the area are keeping a close eye on it.

“This is the fourth fire since I moved out here in 2012 and this is the closest it’s ever been,” said one man.

The ex-con was pulled over because of a stolen license plate. Then cops saw the ammo.

A convicted felon from Miami was arrested at gunpoint Tuesday just outside Key West on Stock Island after police said he was driving around in a car with a stolen license plate.

Juan Sosa-Avila, 46, also was arrested on 15 counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition for the fully loaded gun clip police said they found in the glove box of his Jeep Cherokee. He faces a felony charge for each 9-millimeter round of ammo found inside the clip.

He also was arrested for felony fleeing/eluding police, misdemeanor theft for the license plate that was reported stolen in Miami-Dade County and two traffic violations.
