Big transformation. Bigger purpose.

ABFE Member the Black Freedom Fund () —formerly known as the California Black Freedom Fund—has officially changed its name, but this is more than a rebrand. It marks their evolution into California’s first Black community foundation and the largest pooled fund in the U.S. solely dedicated to Black communities.

Led by Marc Philpart, the Fund has invested $45M+ in Black power-building, backed 200+ Black-led and Black-serving orgs since its founding, and helped secure lasting movement wins.

This milestone marks more than a name change—it’s a recommitment to the vision of lasting Black freedom.

Let’s join together in congratulating the Black Freedom Fund on this powerful milestone and in celebrating their unwavering commitment to building lasting freedom and equity for Black communities.

ABFE had the honor of participating in last month’s & ’s Joint Conference in Albuquerque, NM—bringing together philanthropic leaders committed to racial equity and cross-cultural solidarity across the Americas.

Our President & CEO, Susan Taylor Batten, led a powerful plenary session, “Rethinking Risk: Acting with Conviction When the Stakes Are High,” alongside a dynamic panel of leaders. The conversation tackled how philanthropy must navigate today’s volatile political, legal, and economic landscape while remaining deeply rooted in race-explicit grantmaking. The discussion called for courageous action, internal alignment, and bold decision-making in service of transformative change.

We were also proud to celebrate ABFE Member Dr. Nelson Colón, President of the , who received the 2025 Corazón Award—HIP’s highest honor for visionary leadership. In his remarks, Dr. Colón affirmed that “racism goes beyond borders, so the answer is also beyond borders.”

👏 Congratulations to our partners at HIP and NAP for hosting such a powerful and successful convening.
