On September 11, 2001, Robert was at work when the attacks occurred and tragically lost his life. He was known for his intelligence, quiet humor, and deep love of sports—especially the Mets and Jets. On 9/11, anywhere from 300,000 to 500,000 people were evacuated by water from lower Manhattan in less than nine hours.

As the 9/11 attacks unfolded, it became increasingly difficult to get survivors out of lower Manhattan. When the Twin Towers collapsed, thousands fled to the water’s edge. Seeing the emergency, the U.S. Coast Guard issued a call for all available boats to help those who were trapped. The ensuing maritime response, from NYPD harbor units, fireboats, and ferries to private and commercial boats, initiated the largest waterborne evacuation in American history.

She loved reading—especially Harry Potter—and took part in Girl Scouts, ballet, school plays, and other creative activities. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Zoe boarded American Airlines Flight 77 with her parents, Charles and Leslie, and her younger sister, Dana, traveling to Australia for her mother’s fellowship. The plane was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, killing everyone on board. Zoe is remembered for her curiosity, intelligence, and joyful spirit. A hardworking and devoted mother, she earned her accounting degree with honors from Baruch College in 1999 and worked as a tax auditor trainee for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Winnie was active in her church, singing in the choir and preparing for baptism. On September 11, 2001, she was working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center and tragically lost her life. On September 11, 2001, the United States experienced a series of coordinated terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and injured thousands more. Nineteen al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing both towers to collapse. A third plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The passengers and crew of the fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, fought back, and the plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The attacks had a profound impact on the United States, leading to the declaration of a "war on terrorism" and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security.
