Rob Jetten, the 38-year-old leader of the Dutch centrist party D66, is on track to become the Netherlands’ youngest — and first openly Gay — prime minister, after a strong showing in Wednesday’s election.

Once known as a “nagging climate minister,” Jetten has reinvented himself as a buoyant “yes we can” politician, fronting a slick, optimistic campaign that broadened D66’s message beyond its usual focus on education and the environment. Backed by savvy advertising and a polished communications push, he tackled hot-button issues like housing and immigration head-on, drawing in voters who might otherwise have turned to the right.

He also took aim at far-right leader Geert Wilders, accusing him of “hijacking” Dutch identity and of cynically using women’s and LGBTQ rights to attack Muslim communities.

On election morning, Jetten struck his trademark hopeful tone, posting: “It’s time for positive forces to win. Together we can beat Wilders — I’m ready.”

With D66 projected to win the most votes, Jetten now faces the challenge of coalition talks — and the historic opportunity to make Dutch political history.
