Platte County earned a 49-7 nonconference victory over rival Smithville on homecoming Friday at Pirate Stadium.

Platte County finished second in the White Division for a third straight season, this time coming in behind champion Fort Osage. The Pirates put four players in the top 15 in the final competition before the Class 4 District 4 tournament with senior Grace Handke (fifth) making all-conference for the third time with her best ever placement, while freshman Heidi Loehner (eighth) earned the honor for the first time. Platte County senior Jack Hokanson and freshman Grisham Gutshall finished back to back in ninth and 10th in the 100-yard butterfly while moving up the Class 1 state rankings. The also swam with senior Finn Smith and sophomore Beau Jonkman on a pair of the Pirates' relays that just missed top 16 times in preliminaries at one of the state's deepest meets. Read more:

She talked afterward about participating in senior night; finishing off a tight first set with a two-handed stuff at the net; senior Ashleigh Cruce and sophomore Charlotte Schlake excelling in expanded roles and more. In final tuneup before conference, Platte County sophomore Tyler Stambersky finished third, while freshman Mary Dellinger (sixth) and senior Madelyn Stewart (ninth) joined her in top 10. The Pirates continued to bunch individual placements with blend of experienced and developing runners. Read more:
