Coming off of a charmed run to fourth place in Class 3 last season, Platte County's boys looked set to build on that success and chase a team title in the final season for head coach Reggie Burress after nearly three decades on staff with the program. The Pirates have a state champion (junior Jaxson Shute), another returning finalist (senior Cole Johnson), a third medalist (sophomore Cade Crawford) and five other qualifiers back in a promising lineup but must embrace a new, potentially intimidating challenge.

The move into Class 4 District 4 creates an undeniably more difficult postseason path, but Platte County doesn't plan to back down, consistent with the program's curated identity. Full season preview:

The pieces were in place to make a run at fabricating the type of storybook ending that typically requires a predetermined script.

Platte County senior quarterback Rocco Marriott became the first player in program history to win the Simone Award, given annually to the top player in the Kansas City metro area based on results of a committee vote. He was the top honoree in the Thomas A. Simone Awards ceremony hosted Tuesday morning at Pirate Fieldhouse.

In addition, Platte County senior Braiden Stevens also became the first in program history to receive the Otis Taylor Award, which honors the top wide receiver in the metro.

Marriott set career-highs with 3,707 passing yards and 54 touchdowns this season, leading Platte County to a second straight undefeated Class 5 state title that concluded with Friday’s 34-28 OT victory over Carthage in the championship game. He rewrote the record book and owns school records with a career line of 525 completions on 879 attempts for 8,922 yards and 118 passing touchdowns. He finishes with exactly 11,000 yards of offense and 149 total touchdowns.

Stevens’ senior season ended with 66 catches that resulted in school records of 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns receiving. He finished as Platte County’s all-time leader in receiving yards (2,538) and touchdowns (37).

The Simone Award historically goes to players at large schools in Missouri (Class 5 and 6) and Kansas (Class 5A and 6A).

Platte County previously had four winners of the Fontana Award, given to the top small school player in Kansas City based on voting. This includes QB Spencer Stewart (2018), QB Krae Kelso (2011), RB Zach Sherman (2001) and QB Brandon Gutshall (2000).
