Empathy, beauty, and improvisation define the early work of Ming Smith.

Now on view at the Portland Museum of Art, this exhibition traces a career shaped by movement, memory, and a deep sensitivity to light and lived experience.

Smith’s photographs don’t stand still—they respond, like jazz, to the world unfolding around them.

A Portland Cape is transformed into a compact, three-level family home—expanded upward and redefined through restraint, memory, and light.

What was once a small, familiar structure now becomes a study in adaptation, where salvaged materials, sculptural details, and thoughtful design choices shape a home built for changing needs.

A reminder that good design isn’t about more space—it’s about making every inch matter.

Inspired by years spent in Japan and a deep connection to izakaya culture, Aomori reinterprets Japanese hospitality for Portland with a focus on openness, craftsmanship, and community. Designed with Woodhull, the space features Japanese joinery, warm cherrywood tones, a circular marumado window, and a central open kitchen that highlights the artistry of cooking. From custom ceramics and handblown glassware to a communal table designed for shared dining, every detail reflects a dialogue between Maine and Aomori, Japan’s “blue forest,” bringing two sister states into a single dining experience.

The first thing visitors see at Bloomsbury Publishing’s London offices is the “Authors’ Room,” a richly layered reception space designed by Minnie Kemp. Inspired by the Bloomsbury Group, the room blends murals, contemporary craft, and vivid color with Georgian architecture to create a welcoming, imaginative interior that sets the tone for the entire workplace.
