Domenica Diavoleria’s new album Flicker Statue Eyes had it’s genesis as a live score to Neil Jordan’s 1984 film The Company of Wolves, which is based on a short story by the English writer Angela Carter. This album is Domenica’s re-construction of her original score.
In preparation for composing, she deeply studied and absorbed the writings of Angela Carter. While not her first exposure to her work, she let it guide the music as a muse of
The florid, poetic, and sensual writings of Carter’s were one that she felt gelled with her own approach to making art and music. The film, Carter’s life, and the book The Bloody Chamber helped guide Domenica like a lodestar.
“A friend in the early 2000s first introduced me to the film The Company of Wolves, which was most notorious for having a VHS cover that scared children in the 80s and 90s on the shelves of rental places. My friend knew me enough to know I’d probably enjoy that movie and I did, immensely. I considered it one of my favorite movies ever since. I chose it not to replace the original score, but because it was designed to be a cool event at the Olympia Timberland Library. I took the original score I wrote and spent a year refining it and molding it into a cohesive whole.”
