For Your Consideration: Soul-Searching with Sault's UNTITLED (God)

"This album is SAULT’s most diverse, all-encompassing work to date. While the first two-thirds of the 21-track album feels consistent with being in church (wherever that is to you) and praying to god (whatever that is to you), the last third is a vibey tour through all that SAULT is capable of."

The latest in our For Your Consideration series is a reflection on SAULT's 'UNTITLED (God)' from KEXP's Rachel Stevens. One of the five albums SAULT dropped on November 1, UNTITLED (God) is an expansive offering from the elusive UK project – one that reflected the many prayers Rachel said this year and soundtracked her return to faith.

For Your Consideration: Traversing the Multiverse Within Makaya McCraven’s Masterful In These Times

Ahead of our Best of 2022 countdown, when we'll be counting down the best albums of the year voted on by KEXP listeners, our writers are making the case for some of their favorite releases. Dusty Henry digs deep into Makaya McCraven's multiverse jazz odyssey, 'In These Times.'

“The fears of the last few years still weigh heavily. And yet, I find myself lurching toward hope. The world is different now; I am different now. The issues and worries haven’t resolved themselves. But I’m feeling ready to build new habits. To take this period of uncertainty and reform the ideas I’ve mulled over again and again to forge a fresh start. It’s what I hear McCraven doing all over ‘In These Times.’ Our future depends on our past. We have the choice to take the fragments of our histories and imagine something new for ourselves. Maybe it’s a kaleidoscopic jazz masterpiece. Or maybe it’s holding my daughter close to my chest while we watch a band together. What is the present if not just an amalgamation of our past? We have no choice but to live “in these times.””

Iranian American producer Maral reinterprets Persian folk, classical, and pop music, filtering them through her sonic prism of dub and anarcho-punk. The result: "folk club" that has captured artists and fans alike within Maral's ever-unfolding world of raw, experimental sound.

This week on the Sound & Vision podcast, KEXP's Isabel Khalili reunites with Maral for another conversation about her latest album 'Ground Groove,' the Persian classical music philosophy that guides her approach to sampling, and how her music reflects the resilience of Iranian culture and people.

Wipe the Slate Clean for the Umpteenth Time: A Beat Happening Critical Overview

"All in all, [Music to Climb the Apple Tree By is] a compilation that is a fitting last salvo for one of America’s most significant bands. Not just in terms of format or a necessity to make sure their work is kept in print, but as evidence of the band being unwitting innovators of the indie rock format in general. A call to create first and worry about the fu***ng rules later. What punk rock was meant to be."

Beat Happening fans rejoice! Today, Domino Recording Company has reissued the beloved Olympia band's entire catalog as individual LPs for the very first time. Over the summer, Martin Douglas wrote an exhaustive critical overview on the DIY pioneers.

As KEXP celebrates 50 years of bringing our love of music to the community, we find ourselves this week extolling the virtues of all things 1985. For the occasion, KEXP features writer, local music columnist, and veteran music critic Martin Douglas takes a deep dive into yet another one of the Pacif...

On Grief, Humor, and the Power of the Do-Rag: An Interview With Thundercat

"I think it’s inevitable [to process grief through music]. You can tell so many stories with the music. You can tell somebody else’s story and make up a story. A lot of the time it’s still your story. Music can be healing and therapeutic to abrasive and harsh. It could be any and everything, for the most part. And I think as a spectrum for creating sometimes, it’s not off the spectrum. It’s definitely everything from a coping mechanism to jokes to car crash music to ... yeah, it’s all of that. It’s all of that in there."

As we honor : Grief today, revisit Thundercat's conversation with KEXP's Martin Douglas on the 2020 album 'It Is What It Is,' the death of his close friend and rapper Mac Miller, and using music as a way to cope with loss.

📸: Eric Tra

Hyperbole is strongly discouraged when you've spent your life obsessing over music, but is it really that much of a reach to call Thundercat a once in a lifetime talent?
