650 kids to get free fishing poles, bait and instructions Saturday in Colorado Springs

More than 3,000 people are expected in Memorial Park on June 6 as Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, and Pikes Peak Outdoor Recreation Alliance cohost the free annual Get Outdoors Day family recreation festival.

This region-wide celebration of outdoor recreation dates to 2016 when CPW launched the event as a way to introduce people to all the activities available to them in the outdoors such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, archery and more.

As part of the festival, CPW will give out free fishing poles, bait and instructions to the first 650 kids, ages 15 and under, who attend Get Outdoors Day, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 6, at Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs’ Memorial Park.

Visitors will also receive a passport that they can get stamped at the different vendors. For filling this passport out and turning it in, participants will be entered into a drawing for fun outdoor gear.

City of Fountain

While making one of his regular trips to drop off Gatorade for first responders and other city crews, Fountain City Council member Sean Verhoeff got to witness a class for Fountain PD Explorers last week.

He was super impressed by not only the medical training taught by Corporal Destin Alvarez and Officer Andy Tran, but also the discipline and attentiveness of the Explorers. It's really great to see our youth taking an early interest in serving their community.

Pikes Peak Regional Building Department

With the strong month of May, we have now issued permits for 1,429 new homes in the Pikes Peak region.

That is up 11% compared to this time last year. That's a pretty good start to the year for homebuilders and those looking to buy a new home.

We did some outside re-modeling a couple of years ago and got all our products from them. We got quality materials for an affordable price. I recommend them highly.
