Tulsans can expect to see Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers in the city for a while as part of Operation SAFE, an initiative launched by the state last week to clear homeless people from highway underpasses, rights of way and other state-owned properties, the governor said.

The governor says his action was prompted by meetings with business leaders. Mayor Monroe Nichols says it won't work and that he has shared a different approach with the business community.

Chef Jose Bamaca has opened his third restaurant, 918 Maples Tacos & Cantina, at 2165 S. Sheridan Road.

New location will feature the same menu as the Trenton Avenue restaurant, including made-to-order tacos filled as well as their signature birria tacos and birria pizza.

“There’s always a chance for an upset in this game,” Jenks running back KD Jones said Tuesday during a press conference at Jenks’ Sharp Center. “It’s kind of what Coach (Adam Gaylor) has been telling us all week, they’re going to have their backs against the wall. According to unofficial returns posted Tuesday night by the Oklahoma State Election Board, Owasso Public Schools’ 10-year, $169 million bond proposal passed with 66.34% of the 5,514 votes cast.

Splashy government interventions, like those launched recently to sweep away homeless encampments in Tulsa, won’t solve highly complex issues related to people being chronically unsheltered, people from all corners of the state who gathered Tuesday for a forum held by the Oklahoma Municipal League were told.

The topic was on the agenda at the multiday Oklahoma Municipal League conference, attended by more than 700 mayors, councilors, trustees, city managers, clerks and other municipal professionals.

“It shows there’s demand,” Brad Johnson, founder and CEO of Tulsa's Eden Village, said of the more than 700 applications that have poured in.

Eden Village, a nonprofit project to provide chronically homeless people with permanent residences, is currently up to 45 homes with a goal of 63 by the end of the year.

“I don’t think that’s true,” Tulsa Police Chief Dennis Larsen said when asked about the governor’s remarks that the impetus for Operation SAFE came from business officials.

Gov. Stitt claims he took action after Tulsa business leaders insisted that they were receiving “zero help from the mayor, from the police." TPD Chief Dennis Larsen responded: “I don’t think that’s true."
