Juneteenth traces back to June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that enslaved people were free. Although President Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation years earlier, the message had not reached everyone. The delay turned this moment into a powerful reminder that freedom does not always travel at the same speed for all communities.
Across Texas, people began gathering every June for prayer services, picnics, readings of General Order No 3, and music. Over time, many traditions developed, including parades, barbecues, and storytelling circles. These customs later spread throughout the country. In Texas, the holiday has long been celebrated.
