COVID-19 and Dementia: A Review and Synthesis of Material on a Deadly Combination

Abstract:
Within modern history, the majority of the worldwide population has not experienced pandemic conditions, and not in recent history has a global pandemic occurred. Arguably therefore we were not prepared for, and did not anticipate, some of its effects, with emerging evidence indicating that this was particularly the case with respect to dementia care. The aim of this paper is to highlight some of the issues raised by COVID-19 surrounding dementia care, focusing on issues experienced both by individuals living with dementia and by those who provide their care. This is in response to the need to raise awareness of this issue and we do so by bringing this information together in order that it might inform policy for ongoing care post-virus and future outbreaks and lockdown situations.

Management of Metabolic Acidosis in the Post-Cardiac Surgical Patient

Abstract
The base deficit is the best way to evaluate severity of Metabolic Acidosis (MA). It indicates a value corresponding to the number of mmol/L below 24 of the measured bicarbonate concentration. Base deficit between 0 and 5 mmol/L indicates that the patient is not at risk of immediate harm. Arterial blood gases are typically measured every 2-4 hours following cardiac surgery and there is always a trend in base deficit changes to consider. Where the base deficit is diminishing, this indicates that the patient is improving, whereas when it is worsening, the opposite is true. Base deficits between 5 and 10 indicate that a serious problem is present which requires urgent correction. Where the base deficit is greater than 10, cardiac arrest may occur, and such patients require constant supervision by a doctor if active management is being pursued. Where the base deficit is persistently greater than 15, survival is extremely unlikely. This degree of acidosis is associated with widespread disruption of mitochondria at cellular level. The mitochondria often do not recover even if the precipitating cause of the MA is corrected, in which case the patient develops fatal multisystem organ failure. The management of MA in post-cardiac surgical patients is indivisibly bound up in optimizing circulatory physiology. We have not expounded on how this foundational knowledge should be applied but without it the management of MA in this patient population will be severely hampered.

Automated Solar Powered Street Lighting System with Super Capacitors

Authors: Alvin T Dela Pena*, Clarissa F Quezon and Christian Q Feliciano

Citation: Dela Pena TA, Quezon FC and Feliciano QC. Automated solar powered street lighting system with super capacitors (2020) Edelweiss Appli Sci Tech 4: 1-4.

Abstract
The researchers came up to conduct a study in creating a street lighting system powered up by solar panels that sustains its own power as a standalone system off the grid line. By analyzing the collected data regarding the power consumption of the institution where in every 15% increase in
the student’s population, there is 20% increase in the electric bill consumption rate, that is why the researchers continue to expand their previous
study, the charging station that gives an alternative source of electrical energy for mobile devices in the institution, to consider a free energy that
can be a source of light during night time, this may lessen the power consumption in the near future not only by supplying mobile devices but by
also illuminating the environment of the campus. Two hardware designs were constructed and tested as an initial hardware design to control the
lighting system namely; a microcontroller unit that will act as the charge controller for the storage unit and a relay module using discrete
components that will also act with the same function
