Drama in KuGompo City!

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) has slammed the alleged coronation of a Nigerian “king” in KuGompo (formerly East London), calling it an unlawful impersonation.

Deputy Minister Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe warned that such actions undermine South Africa’s democratic gains and the rule of law. CoGTA is now working with DIRCO and the Nigerian High Commission to investigate.

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) also condemned the coronation, saying it violates South Africa’s legal and cultural frameworks. Meanwhile, the AbaThembu Royal House distances itself from social media claims linking King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo to the event.

should the government take stronger action, or is this just social media chaos?

Eastern Cape in turmoil ahead of provincial conference!

The ANC in the Eastern Cape is meeting this Tuesday to address internal disputes — but a faction of members has taken the matter to court to stop this weekend’s conference.

Secretary Lulama Ngcukaitobi cites irregularities, including unlawful QR codes for Branch General Meetings and possible membership system manipulation. He also claims the Step Aside rule isn’t being applied consistently, and blames ANC Secretary‑General Fikile Mbalula for failing to act.

Are these court challenges justified, or is this just political infighting?

AbaThembu Royal House Denies Nigerian King Coronation Claims

The Royal House of AbaThembu says social media reports that King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo welcomed and granted royalty to a Nigerian national are “fake news”. Royal advisor Adv. Matthew Mpahlwa calls the claims the work of “sick and depraved minds”.

Meanwhile, videos of Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko being crowned “Igwe Ndigbo” are going viral. The African Transformation Movement urges government investigation, calling it a dangerous precedent.

King Dalindyebo, known for his outspoken political views, continues making headlines across the Eastern Cape.

As we continue to observe Human Rights Month, conversations around culture, identity, and leadership are becoming more important than ever.

Recently, reports from East London have raised questions after a ceremony where a Nigerian community appeared to crown a traditional leader under the title Igwe Ndigbo.

This has led many to ask:

Was this recognised by the South African government?
Was it approved by local traditional leaders?
And how does it align with the cultural systems of the Xhosa people in the Eastern Cape?

Authorities have indicated that such leadership structures are governed by law and established tradition, but the full details around this particular event remain a topic of public discussion.

In a country as diverse as South Africa, the balance between cultural expression and legal recognition is important.

Human Rights Month reminds us not only to ask questions — but to ask them with respect, understanding, and a commitment to unity.

We invite you to reflect:
Where do we draw the line between cultural freedom and established tradition?
