When does a handbag become a work of art?

Last night, Style Editor Kiri Johnston stepped inside HŌLUS-BŌLUS for the unveiling of A-ESQUE The Bag in Braid.

Presented within an apartment exhibition in Surry Hills curated by Emma Elizabeth and Cassandra Bird Bird for the Sydney Contemporary VIP Offsite Program, the collection places one-of-one hand-braided leather bags among contemporary art and collectible design.

Developed over 18 months by founder Amanda Rettig and her Melbourne atelier, each piece takes days to complete as hundreds of leather strips are individually cut, skived and plaited by hand.

“What we are doing here is closer to couture than to leather goods,” Rettig says.

An infinite artistic legacy.

For more than seven decades, Yayoi Kusama transformed hallucinations, repetition and psychological experience into a visual language recognised around the world.

From her early Infinity Net paintings and radical performances to Narcissus Garden, polka-dotted pumpkins and the immersive Infinity Mirror Rooms, the pioneering Japanese artist created worlds audiences could enter, feel and share.

Kusama has passed away in Tokyo at the age of 97. Her studio announced the news on 27 August, confirming that she passed away in hospital on 14 August 2026. She continued painting until her final days, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond the dots and mirrored rooms for which she became famous.

Dolly has made her way into the hearts of the people with a decades-long career spanning country music, acting, philanthropy, book-writing, and so much more, leaving the world with a little more sparkle than when she found it.

Known for her voluminous wigs, colourful style, and infectious positive energy, we reflect on some of Dolly’s most iconic moments, and remember the icon for the incredible lady of style and class she was.

What a woman. Rest in peace, Dolly Parton.
