Ready to get on the water this summer?

Georgia’s lakes and rivers invite adventurers to explore the outdoors while gliding amid the reeds, trees and fish. And for those who prefer a little spirit of competition to their water sports, there are training camps for competitive kayaking and more.

As you gather with family and friends today to celebrate Memorial Day, please take time to remember the true meaning of the holiday. Today, we honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Some of the ceremonies today will feature buglers from Bugles Across America, a group of volunteers who answer the call to provide a touching final tribute by playing "Taps" at the funeral of a service member or veteran. The organization is always looking for more players. To learn more, read our November 2022 story, "Musical honors," at https://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/gemc/georgia_202211/index.php #/p/20. Nothing says "summer" like the blinks of light from dancing lightning bugs on a warm evening. Unfortunately, the insects have been in decline in recent years. But efforts in Georgia are working to reverse that trend by encouraging homeowners to take simple steps to make their yards more firefly-friendly. To learn more about these beloved bugs and how to help them thrive, check out "Lights off for fireflies" on page 24.
