Hair and makeup artist Ricci de Forest was not planning to open a museum when he purchased an empty storefront in Atlanta. But he discovered beauty tools dating back to the 1940s that were connected to the far-reaching beauty empire of Madame C.J. Walker, the first black woman to become a millionaire in the U.S., and he knew he had a cultural treasure on his hands. When he later learned that the nation’s first black-owned/-operated radio station also began in the building, he decided to honor both legacies with the Madame C.J. Walker Boutique Museum/WERD Studio.
