šŸŽ‰ THIRTEEN šŸŽ‰

Thirteen years ago, at the stroke of midnight tonight, we launched Substrate Radio. Jason and I were sitting out front of The Nick when he hit the play button on the station. It’s an easy anniversary to remember. So much love and heart and sweat and tears have gone into this station over the years and am so proud to still be here. Thank you for listening and thank you to all of the amazing folks that keep Substrate going and have helped along the way. So incredibly thankful. Happy New Year and Happy Birthday, Substrate.

We are one week away from the Firehouse End of the Year Bash and from giving away our first Jason Hamric Scholarship for the Arts. Jason was a not just the creator of Substrate Radio, he was a true lover of all art. With a deep love of all music and especially what was upcoming and new and cool and underground, he brought to light so much great music and so many great artists through the station. He was an amazing musician himself, with a deep seated love in power pop and shoegaze, he could bend a guitar neck, control feedback, and put together a pedalboard that would put anyone to shame. He was an amazing songwriter, a huge gear head, and he even managed and helped a few bands along the way. He was a beloved mastering engineer that got to work on hundreds of albums. Jason was also an incredible photographer and had a keen eye for the beauty around him. His love of gear also bled into (every aspect really) photography and he loved shooting film, shooting Polaroids, and even developing film in his kitchen sink quite frequently. He had a true DIY heart and wanted to learn how to do it, make it, or create it from scratch himself. He was what some called the ā€œuniversal adaptorā€ with connecting people with the things or people they needed to make their lives better. He worked in film for years on short films, documentaries, working on the crew in most roles, and even filmed a few music videos you may have seen. He could also shred on a skateboard and grew up with the punk rock ethos of non-conformity. You knew exactly how he felt about the situation (and you) at all times because he wasn’t scared to stand behind his beliefs and be true to his heart…and it was a giant heart. Come out Thursday to support the students from and celebrate Jason with us. We are so glad his giving spirit will live on with this scholarship.

🚨 Couldn’t be more excited to announce this! We will be presenting the first Jason Hamric Scholarship for the Arts and celebrating The Firehouse Community Arts Center!

On December 18th, come out to the Firehouse CAC End of the Year Bash 2025!

Close out the year with an inspiring night of music and community! Shaheed and DJ Supreme will kick things off with a KRU set before Firehouse students take the stage to perform original songs celebrating the release of Firehouse Summer Sessions Vol. 3.

The event also honors the legacy of Jason Hamric, a lifelong supporter of Birmingham’s music and arts scene, with a special scholarship check presentation, followed by student performances of some of Jason’s favorite songs. Members of Jason’s band Holiday Gunfire will perform to round out the night.

As always, the event will feature a silent auction filled with amazing items and services generously donated by your favorite Birmingham businesses!

Upgrade your night by purchasing VIP tickets. VIPs will enjoy an exclusive experience that will include:
⁃ Access to Saturn’s private green room
⁃ Delicious bites from DG
⁃ Handcrafted cocktails mixed by Steva Casey
⁃ Complimentary beer from Cahaba Brewing
⁃ Free event poster
⁃ Reserved, elevated seating for every performance

Come celebrate youth creativity, support the next generation of Birmingham musicians, and wrap up the year with a powerful night of music and community. All proceeds support the Firehouse’s mission to create a more diverse and inclusive music community.

Substrate representing in Dublin this weekend for the My Bloody Valentine show. šŸ–¤

This was the last show Jason and I had tickets for. We woke up at 3 AM to get tickets as soon as they went on sale (so many months ago!). Well, I knew I still had to go even if it meant going without him. He’d want me to be there and I’m so glad I went.

There’s no way to describe (but I’ll try) and there’s no way that the phone could capture the audio correctly but this show is the whole reason I flew nine hours across the ocean and it was worth it. Jason warned me that it would be the loudest show I’d go to and he was right. Even with earplugs it was intense but I did take them out for a few songs I needed to hear at full volume. There were times when I felt like I was sitting under the space shuttle as it launched. It vibrated the whole body, through the floors, in your chest and pulsed through your head.

Before the show I warned the guys sitting next to me (they flew in from Paris and you can see them head banging on one video) that I’d probably cry and I can tell you I didn’t disappoint. I sat there with tears just streaming down my face for a relentless hour and a half. Songs that Jason loved. Songs we listened to together so many times especially when we were first dating. My love for mbv and my love of Jason are intertwined. I hate he wasn’t there physically but I felt him with me on every step of this trip. I sat there crying and smiling and knew he’d be really proud of me for still going and that brought me so much joy.

Enjoy some little highlight clips from last night. šŸ’œ

XO,
Jackie Lo
