Sharing my journey as I learn the tools and tricks of capturing landscapes and wildlife. Constellation Studios is more than just a place.

Constellation Studios is a company that is all about the love of sound. More than just a building. A constellation by definition is "a group or configuration of ideas, feelings, characteristics, objects, etc., that are related in some way". This is Constellation Studios at it's heart. Whatever your project, whatever your need, Constellation strives to offer you with the tools, talent, and time you need.

The story of the birth of Jesus:
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

He was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

Last November I finally caved and signed up for YouTube premium. I think it might have changed my life. Getting to be inspired an informed by the multitude of creators without the drag of ads seems to have unlocked a new passion for me. I love that a place like this exists to be inspired and educated. Yes I learned about gear, but more importantly, I learned about style & method while also being inspired to get out and work on my craft.

A special tanks to the channels shown here and the many many more have helped me grow a new passion this year!

Lens compression is my favorite tool. The more “zoomed in” you are, the more the things far from you look close. It helps create a sense of depth and scale that gets lost on wider focal ranges.

This shot was from the 2.5x (70mm) lens of the Mavic 4 Pro Drone. Notice how the mountains create layers even though they’re quite a distance apart.

What’s your favorite focal length?

Thoughts from my first test flight of the Mavic 4 Pro. This is by no means award winning footage, but I endured the bone chillingly cold wind to test some of the most anticipated improvements of this drone:
✔️ 28mm main camera - I actually like the tighter feild of view because I’m a fan of more lens compression (foreground and background look slightly closer together at 28mm than 24mm
✔️ 70mm and 168mm lens improvements and D-Log on both. 🤯 I could immediately tell they were better. Especially the 168mm
✔️ Dynamic range was exceptional. A few shots had more noise than I would have expected but I wasn’t paying as close of attention to settings as I could have (it was so cold!
✔️ 360 gimbal. I mean yeah not that practical but wow is it trippy to fly and spin the gimbal.
✔️ RC2 Pro controller. So amazing with the larger, brighter screen.
✔️ Battery life (in pretty bad wind) was exceptional
🚫 I struggled with some of my gain and expo tuning on the flight controls. I need to bring over my Mavic 3 Pro settings and give it a try.
🚫 Strafing into the wind was a struggle. More testing required.

I’ve been biding my time waiting for the Mavic 4 Pro to become more readily available in the US. That time has finally come! Just in time for the impending FCC “ban” on new DJI products. When it was released earlier this year it checked all the boxes I wished could be improved on the Mavic 3 Pro. I’m SO excited. Now I just need summer to come back!

📷 🦅 Higgins Point outside of Coeur d’Alene Idaho is widely known for its spectacular bald eagle migration. Hundreds of these majestic birds flock to the area to winter and feed on the Kokanee salmon.

I took 1200 photos over 3.5 hrs to get these 14 keepers. I don’t consider myself a “bird” guy but there’s something special about capturing a bird photo. It’s challenging by testing both patience and technical skill.

There was only one shot I didn’t get that I wanted: positioning at water level to capture a fish being taken up. Unfortunately by the time I found the right spot the sun was setting and the eagles were slowing down. Next time though!

🌌 I almost missed it. I had to work late, but I knew the solar storm was lighting up the sky. I was able to get home to my camera in time to capture some amazing transitions from red/pinks to blues/greens before the clouds rolled in. I wish I had a more interesting foreground but the colors are still astounding!

The last two images were a bit of a surprise. The Seven Sisters (Pleiades) constellation and then the nebulae near it. I’m excited to get back out on a clear night to try to capture more of that!
