Meet Kelly Rushing Medley — mentor, merit badge counselor, unofficial troop photographer, and proud Iron County mom.

Alongside her husband Jeremy (Scoutmaster of Troop 403) and their son Carter (new Cub Scout), she’s helping the next generation earn those life skills that tablets just can’t teach.

We caught up with the whole crew at Elephant Rocks State Park to talk Scouting America, 141 merit badges, and why this place still feels magical after all these years.

“Being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly… doesn’t seem all that bad considering the alternative of being raised by TikTok.”

That line from our latest story pretty much says it all.

We sat down with Kelly Rushing Medley (and the whole Medley crew) at the top of Elephant Rocks to talk about Scouting America, Troop 403, and why the program still matters so much in Iron County. Kelly mentors in Exploration and Theatre, Jeremy leads as Scoutmaster, and young Carter just joined Cub Scouts — already loving the adventure.

From the Scout Oath to 141 different merit badges, the Medleys show how Scouting builds confident, capable kids who grow into leaders. And the setting? Those massive pink granite rocks that locals sometimes take for granted… until you meet visitors from other countries who traveled just to see them.

This one’s full of heart, humor, and a whole lot of Iron County pride.

Been to a Fireside Feast? Yeah, me neither. But I can honestly say that, walking in, I didn’t expect one moment to awaken my soul. It came slowly – first, a tightness under my ribs, then it eased – and suddenly I was inside something I couldn’t name. I’d never seen this before. For a few seconds, I wasn’t defined by my past or plans; I was simply that feeling: grateful and exhilarated. We want to share these 10 photos with you, but it really doesn’t do it justice.
