Mahjong may be rooted in ancient tradition, but in Valdosta, it's experiencing a thoroughly modern revival. It has become more than just a game - it's a social movement, a creative outlet, and a cultural bridge. From themed tournaments and custom tiles to league nights and family play dates. Mahjong is bringing people together across generations, neighborhoods, and backgrounds.
One group of fiends, Stephanie Kurrie, McCree Woodall, Elizabeth Burns, and Lindsey Odum, have hosted weekly games since 2023. For them, it's about connection. They even plan an annual beach trip centered around Mahjong.
Devan Martin, and Emily Wetherington never imagined that their first lesson in 2024 would lead to starting the Valdosta Mahjong League which has taught dozens of others to play. Perfect Settings, Devan's store, has a beautiful selections of Mahjong sets and accessories.
For Courtney Horton and Maura Respess, Mahjong is both deeply personal and beautifully creative. They were inspired to launch Bamboo South Mahjong- a boutique experience housed at Chez What Collective. Their goal is to blend tradition, design, and instruction into something uniquely Valdosta.
