Repost from

Paul Rosenberg is a kind, funny, hip-hop loving guy. He knew Dilla far longer than I did, and the interesting thing is that, at this point, Dilla has been dead longer than any of us, besides his immediate family, knew him. The first time I talked to Paul about Dilla I started crying, and that’s generally speaking the way that things get, for any of us that knew Dilla, when we get around someone that shared his space.

This far later there is still a sense of great tragedy, the likes that ancient scrolls or Medieval epics carry, wrapped up in him. One of the great beauties of Dan Charnas’s ‘Dilla Time’ book is the way that he shows us that tragedy, and reveals Dilla in all of his humanity, in a way that I would have thought would have been impossible to write for someone who wasn’t there. His is masterful prose, and there’s over 400 pages of it. I have told everyone I know who has the book to read it slowly, and let the moments sink in.

House Shoes told me that he was happy that “the truth” was finally out there. “The truth,” as anyone who has seen ‘Rashomon,’ can attest, is often best shown in conflicting accounts of the same happenings. And there are many in ‘Dilla Time,’ and this is how we know we’ve come to the source.

B+ asked me if I could think of another book written like this for anyone in the hip hop generation? I couldn’t name one. Rosenberg said that the way Dan set the scenes, not just those for the introduction of a key character in Dilla’s life, but the milieu in which he moved, was uncanny.

What Dan also did in ‘Dilla Time,’ is paint the picture of hip hop’s rise, from the mid-1990s to the present day. It’s incredible: the care he offers so many in these tales, today’s also-rans who, to us who were there, living and working and striving in those times, were once the arbiters of the movement Dilla catalyzed. Again, the result is a balanced, fair account of what really happened in that crucial decade in which Dilla appeared, ascended, and fell.

Repost from

This photo is of the late composer and musician Galt MacDermot, his son Vincent, and myself, taken in 1999 by Galt’s wife, Maureen. This is the garden table on which we took meals and discussed music during the time that I worked for the family, and Galt’s Kilmarnock Records, organizing and annotating piles of records and reels and ephemera and trying to spread Galt’s musical gospel. This was the year I met J Dilla – Peanut Butter Wolf heeded my request to introduce me to anyone who might want original copies of Galt’s albums. He told me that Dilla – we still called him Jay Dee – was in New York, working with Common, and he gave me Dilla’s number. In short order, I was in the studio with Dilla, Common, and Bob Power, and I gave Dilla stacks of Galt’s albums. One of those albums was ‘The Nucleus,’ which Dilla would sample as “Mash,” for ‘Donuts.”

Galt’s best friend in the world was the drummer Bernard Purdie, a kraken of rhythm. Galt came of musical age in the swing era and he and his friends ushered in the funk epoch. “When will rhythm change,” Galt would often ask? We would engage the possibilities. We would always end on a hung note. Galt knew Dilla’s music – I showed it to him, like I showed him the music of all of the producers who I was offering his albums to. Galt loved hip hop. Galt and I were looking for something as momentous and obvious as what happened with funk replaced swing.

Dan Charnas’s argument in ‘Dilla Time’ is that the answer was already happening around us – literally, a ferry ride away from Staten Island in Manhattan: it’s just that the answer was happening in a micro, not macro, manner. If you grew up with Dilla’s music, you knew it was different than what you heard around you immediately. If you worked with Dilla, you knew he had influenced countless musicians, and you could probably begin to explain a bit as to how.

But only now, in Dan’s book, do we have the first real argument for a rhythmic shift in popular music, the third in 100 or so years, by the greatest artist working in the age of digital reproduction.
