Time Warp Zine

Time Warp Zine Writing, illustrations, and photography related to NYC punk 'n rock music(ians), art(ists), the LES, anti-gentrification activism, ecology, politics, &more

A continuous theme of Time Warp will be the events and stories of New York City set between the late 1960s and the current year / age. Additional themes mixed in will include: humor, artists and genuine creative people, punk & rock ‘n roll, activism, and RESISTING: conformity, gentrification, and more. While honoring the past, we aim to break through the paralyzing nostalgia for the old city. The condition of our gentrifying city will not improve if we let ourselves wallow in sadness, self pity, and nostalgia. We encourage and hopefully inspire people to take action in any way(s) they see fit. Start by getting angry. Anger sparks creative response and change. Sadness and nostalgia leads to resigning yourself to the situation and not doing anything to help change the current trends. "Someone should do something!" You ARE someone and you CAN do something... Just use your imagination. It is NEVER too late. "Let's do the time warp again..."

Mission: Why Time Warp?.. Because PUNK IS NOT DEAD !! Because the situation facing our city (gentrification, class war, suburban invasion, cultural sterilization and parasitism) will not improve if we let ourselves be paralyzed by our longing for the past. We must realize that all is not lost. We must fight to PRESERVE what remains and to RESTORE what has been lost. Because we are done sitting idly by, watching as these parasites feed on our culture, contribute nothing, and DESTROY their host in the process. Because we are no longer waiting for somebody to do something. Because we ARE somebody and we CAN do something. Because we are MAD AS HELL and we are not going to take it anymore !! Because we outnumber the invaders, we have COMMUNITY, and we are ROOTED here. CAN YOU DIG IT?? Because THEY want to remove us from OUR F**KIN' CITY. Because our HOME is not an entertainment zone. THE PARTY IS OVER. Because we need to RESIST the plan they have laid out for us. Because we need a REVOLUTION. Because we need to TAKE OUR CITY BACK !!

"Nothing we do is meant to be a parody or campy joke, as has been mistakenly alleged on too many occasions. This heartbreaking misperception cuts us to our core. It's apparently based on the inaccurate impression of status quo observers and non-believers, based solely on their own prejudice toward an alien culture they don't understand.
Our songs are autobiographical. Humor and jive talk are undeniable aspects of our lives and subsequently our music, but we're deadly serious about everything we do. Our intention (whether we succeed or not) is to continue in the bigger-than-life tradition of Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley, who notoriously used exaggeration to intensify the truth. Nobody ever called them a joke. If we mention monsters, we're talking about real monsters, meaning ourselves.
We have remained unwavering in our reverence for pure rock 'n' roll. It's our life, our wife, and our religion. Our musical heroes are our best friends, preserved for eternity through their records. We're not making fun of anything. What others call trash is our treasure. We don't care if we're considered self-deluded crackpots. Just don't call us insincere, or we'll have to punch you in the nose."

Punk Icon Richard Hell Looks Back At “Blank Generation” Forty Years Later

In the photograph, Richard Hell stretches open his jacket to show the words “YOU MAKE ME ____,” written across his chest in thick black marker. The punk-rock pioneer liked the way the image simultaneously blamed the world (“you”) and engaged his audience to fill in the blank, much like his song “Bla...

Time Warp issue #2 may or may not be complete by October 28... If not, it will be soon after. It's between either rushing the pieces and printing a poorly finished product, or taking another week or two to get everything done right. The best option is to delay the release date a bit.... There will be some updates posted in the near future, including mail order and store locations.

My op-ed in today's Daily News: "New York is no longer suffering the fiscal crisis of the 1970s. It is one of the most desirable cities in the world and doesn't need to sell itself cheap to every bidder with a fat wallet. It is time to regulate the system and come back into balance, so our neighborhoods are truly for their people again."

We're reopening submissions for the next issue of Time Warp. Specifically seeking art, written pieces, and true stories related to NYC, especially if there are additional themes included (community, music, etc). We will also be looking for local bands to promote, review, and/or interview, so feel free to send music links.
Simultaneously, we will be continuing to spread Time Warp to new retail locations and an updated list will be provided soon.

There's something incredibly special about record stores.. they're like discovery centers or treasure chests. There are so many artists/bands you'd never be exposed to if not for the record stores. I remember my first taste of that was during Sounds' (on St. Marks) closing sale. I found CDs of groups that I had heard of, but never got around to listening to. The prices were so low that I could come away with a huge pile and risk buying recorded music of groups that I wasn't familiar with. That way, I was exposed to a HUGE variety, like never before... people would also check out what I had selected and start conversations, potentially making friends as a result. It's just not the same when you find music online. This kind of personal experience is steadily being lost in NYC...
