Daniel Brandhorst, Ronald Gamboa, and their 3-year-old son, David Reed Gamboa Brandhorst, were a gay family who tragically died together on United Airlines Flight 175 during the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The family was aboard the second hijacked plane that crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
The family remembered symbol of the diverse lives lost on 9/11. Their deaths also highlighted the legal and financial struggles faced by surviving same-sex partners and families, as domestic partners initially lacked federal and state recognition for survivor benefits and compensation funds. This advocacy eventually led to critical policy changes and support funds for LGBTQ+ families affected by the tragedy.
